Photographer’s Note

We spent the day at The Maroon Bells Scenic Area in the White River National Forest. We walked from Maroon Lake along one of the trails into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness to Crater Lake at an altitude of 10,076ft (3071m). It is a steep and rocky trail which climbs for almost two miles up an ancient rockslide, mainly through forest.

Crater Lake, a ‘dead lake’ with no fish, is right at the base of the Maroon Bells. I cannot find any reference to why it is called Crater Lake. As far as I know it is not volcanic. If anyone has information you might like to let me know.

This shot was taken just before we reached the lake. There is a complementary image in the WS, taken from the lake shore.

Thanks to Reed I have now figured out how to use the map feature! The pointer seems to be in the trees, but you get a good idea where I was standing.
