I'm an Optimist.
Dedicated all those anglers who have sat at the end of a pier or somewhere similar , time after time & went home empty handed but knew that the next time they cast their rod they would land a big catch, I'm one of them.
Looking at a serious problem with a little bit of humour.
The Lake is empty due mainly to low to lack of rainfall. The Lake is fed by Deans Creek and Barongarook Creek but relies heavily on direct rainfall over the Lake. In most years more water evaporates from the Lake than is captured by rain.
The lake has always been shallow. It is one of the more than I,000 shallow lakes in the Corangamite basin formed by early volcanic activity. Sediment washed from Deans Creek and Barongarook Creek has added to the level of the Lake bed over time decreasing the depth of the Lake.
In recorded memory the Lake has receded a number of times and recovered. The level has risen so much in some years as to cause flooding, as in 1953, 1975,1992 and 1993. Several government committees & businesses are looking at the problem in order to revitalise the Lake as a recreational, social, environmental and economic asset to this part of Victoria.

I've never seen Lake Colac empty before. That's both amazing and rather frightening.

Very funny with a good title and with a real good composition and point of view to pass the message :-)

Quite fun shot. It seems staged but never mind as there's important message behind. Especially thinking about Victoria suffering of serious heatwave. Good framing. Bright colours suit the scorching ambience.

Hi there, Santo, you chose a beautiful title for this pic: it has many different senses and, if you look again and again this pic, and think about your words, then you get sad. Great, great job! Regards, Rikk

Inderdeed a very strange moment, fishers fishing in a dry lake!
I find your picture very nice not realistic but attractive.
Nice composition, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,

I don't know what they are fishing. Funny picture and a very good title. Very interesting composition.

This mob would have as good a chance of catching a fish as we have had this past two weeks prowling the continental shelf looking for marlin.
A very funny shot, wonderful composition and the talent direction is excellent.

How strange that both of us have posted yesterday angler's photos - from the two sides of the world - passion is one and the same.
I like your humour to have hidden the lake - as if the anglers are fishng in a dry field:-))
I wish you a nice weekend,

what a great sense of humor! But I am afraid, that the mentioned conditions are rather frightening. One can almost feel that it is very hot down under and the dry grass and the bright sky are emphasizing this impression. It is not a pleasant shot but it is a composition with food for thoughts. TFS!

It takes a lot of patient to go angling, especially when empty handed at the end of day/night. I think your shot here showing only the grass portion of the lake has a subtle meaning to the title of optimist; a fine sense of humor there to see 3 people fishing on land, as if. I still recall one of your earliest posts about cracked soil and a tied boat, because this vision, with the wooden piers, generates the same line of thought in my mind. Very effective composition, I must say.
Have a good WE.

Hi Santo, very amusing shot - the juxtaposition of people "fishing" but no water. I guess these were people known to you that "volunteered" to be models? cheers, Steve

I´m an optimist too, very funny and good idea , two good ideas really...to take this capture and to post on TE, making smile to all of us!!!
Thanks for this good moment...
I wish you a nice week end.

HI Santo, behind the humour are some very scary messages. Climate change and what we're to do about it are depicted well in your photo. I like the POV, and the raw colours. It evokes so much of this dry land. Congratulations, Lisa.

this is a funny picture, but in the same time, this is dramatic, because it's not the only lake like this in the world, and we can wonder what will happenen to our poor and precious Earth! How many people are really conscous of the problem, and how many can forget the money ,to improve the nature?Maybe for this 3 fishermen,it's a way of causing and of making reflect, and they succeed there very well!
Longroute (19396) 2009-01-31 3:51
it's a good composition and we need a bit of humor once in a while...
Disabled_A (0) 2009-01-31 14:17
almost "swedish colours": blue and yellow ;) They never fail to create an optimistic photo!
I like the bright sunny day and I like the mood :) Very good composition, I like the low POV.
Have a nice Sunday :)

The joke is good, the photograph too. It is necessary well to smile a little of the serious problems of planet, without giving up trying to solve them. A beautiful image, much of humour.
Have a nice sunday

I can only see a narrow stretch of water far removed from the tip of the pier. It is a sad scene very different from what I recalled several years back when the water level was much higher. The actions looks natural and well captured as if the fela has even caught a fish. I like the refreshing summer colours in this composition.
The weather here is the exact opposite, raining all day, almost everyday for the last 4 to 6 weeks. Bill and I managed to go out yesterday with our cameras and umbrellas!

You treated a grave problem in a funny way, i like the three different position of the fishers, especially the woman dressed with Australia flag on her dress.
kschanna (6) 2009-02-03 5:10
Excellent picture and I have to admit one of your best, so much humurous meaning ;)
thanks for sharing

Ciao Santo. I reckon this photo of yours will confirm to the viewer that "They're a Weird Mob." Only in Australia, even if it is for a lark. They could be practicing for the day when there is water in the lake. Great POV and composition. I like the yellow colour of the water.Saluti. Klaudio.
mafegan (8624) 2009-03-21 22:32
Very funny. I notice you have a couple of very patriotic actors - 1 wearing green and gold and the other wearing the flag. Only in Oz. Tfs, Marlene

I like the intro to the notes as much as the image registered here. The humor is there as no visible water to the fish in there :-) The shot to expose the anglers are very well taken care off against the bright beautiful straight horizon and blue sky. I like it and TFS.

Hello Santo! I am NO bird :))) but you made my day ... all so so funny. Your picture is Australia all over, the humour hangs over this land, just incredible. Yes it is serious ... but it makes things easier to laugh about it without loosing the connection. I have a lot of picutres from Australia but they are on slides but when I am retired one day ... you know etc. I might begin scanning my stuff but seeing my father and that I actually never see him because he is always somewhere, this probably will never happen :))) Great picture, Santo, you have a wonderful collection ... Barbara.
