Photographer’s Note
Driving across middle Arizona I heard a loud noise and the back of this 2 ton car jerked left and right. In my rearview mirror, I saw a long black strip fly up out of a cloud of smoke. The car steadied as I slowed. I pulled off and found that the right rear tyre had shed its skin. It was an almost-new Firestone (remember those - on Ford Explorer s.u.v.'s?). The tread had done some damage when it hit the exhaust, which now was triangular in cross-section.
