Photographer’s Note

Following on from my last posting taken at the slipway at Lymington, this panorama was taken further downstream where the Lymington river broadens out into the Solent, the stretch of water that separates the Isle of Wight [seen in the distance on the right] from the mainland of the southern coast of England.

The Solent is renowned as an area for sailing enthusiasts, the annual highlight being Cowes Week.

The Wightlink ferries that travel across to Yarmouth on the I.O.W. from Lymington, shuttle to and fro, and there are usually two or three in service at any one time. The vessels have a loading ramp at both ends, so can travel backwards and forwards equally well. The river here is fairly narrow, so the ferries can only pass each other in the wider parts.

Have a look at Map:[view] for a good aerial view of all this.

This panorama was cropped using the full width of a single image taken by a small compact camera, so I apologise for the quality not being as good as if it was a stitching of several images.
