Photographer’s Note

The fishing smack "Telegraph" with Maldon Hythe in the background.

The Telegraph is a very handsome vessel and her pedigree shows through in her elegant lines. She was built in Boston (Lincolnshire UK)in 1906 as part of William Stringer’s fishing fleet and used for spratting and prawning for many years. She was reputed to have quite a turn of speed as she, and her sister vessel, the “Majestic”, were noted Boston regatta winners for several years. She has had two major rebuilds in 1946 and again in 1979. Her present owner, a local Maldon shipwright, originally purchased her in 1979 for £1 and promptly gave her a major restoration. However, he sold her in 1986 only to re-purchase her in 1995. Her fishing days ended in 1969.

Thank you for your interest.
