Photographers Note
Although many pictures have been posted of the Painted Hills, I thought I'd post one more to give myself the opportunity to show the full-sized version of my profilephoto, taken by Rob Featherstone. I also have one of Kath and Rob catching the last light.
The heavily eroded volcanic deposits of the John Day River basin preserve a record of animal and plant life, spanning more than 40 of the 65 million years of the Cenozoic Era (the "Age of Mammals and Flowering Plants"). The red coloring is laterite soil that formed by floodplain deposits when the area was warm and humid. The green colors are glaauconite which was formed when marine life was very slowly deposited. Typically this occurred in the Jurassic period. Glauconite can range from olive green to blue green.
Here in the Painted hills area, the laterite soil is more olive green than the gold that appears here.

Hi, Pat.
One of the few places I still have to visit, up there, in that wonderful Oregon territory... This (and Henry the Bear in Mitchell) are definitely on my agenda at some point hopefully in the near future. Stunning display of light and colors, unique landscape in all possible respects, absolutely unique! And Kath's picture of you and Larry is simply lovely. God bless y'all. Have a good day, I'll be seeing you.
Fulvio.

hi Pat,
the light and colours could not be more harmonious that in your photo, I love how the warm light brings out the golden yellow and red colours. the rolling hills add to the impression of the light FLOWING over the landscape, that's absolutely beautiful. and the blue sky works perfectly as a background, I HAVE TO visit this place.
best,
Kristine

Wonderful light and color, Pat.
I love the ribbons of different warm shades and colors and it's beautiful in contrast to that blue sky. I especially like the reds and that darker layer up close to the sky. Fabulous depth, too. Really a beautiful shot! Many thanks and warm regards,
Shelly

Hello Patricia,
I love that ws Rob made, it shows the both of you full with pleasure and happiness, lovely picture.
Your own version here from this famous location isn't bad either. Lot's of compositions are possible and here you show us a wider perspective of the whole area. Even the mountain range in the back has nice colours and makes this whole area even more interesting. That warm light over the fields enahnce the quality of this shot even more....well done.
Regards,
Henk

I saw this last night and wanted to comment right away, but as I had spent up I had to wait now you can't edit any more. First of all thanks for the mentions and Rob also sends his thanks and good wishes. He's thrilled you like the pic so much. If you e-mail your SD address I will get it printed from the full size file and send it out with a disc as well. I haven't figured out how to e-mail big files.
I remember this view from when we walked up the hill while we were waiting for the sunset. I like the inclusion of the grasses in the fg and the contrast between the hills and the bg mountains. We have wonderful memories of the days we spent with you and Larry. Don't know who that other couple is on the other WS :D
Take care

Olį Pat,
Nice general picture of the area, including both the foreground and background. Indeed, so many colors in a single picture/location.
The ws are very nice too. I've noticed already you profile photo and now I can see how lovely it is.

Good shot of this amazing place - the colour never fails to make an impression. Because of the angle of the light, we can't really see the folds in the hills which add a lot of interest to the place. I think the inclusion of the grasses at the bottom adds a nice sense of depth to the scene. Well done!

Hi Pat,
The image looks like a big patchwork of layers and rolling hills. The warm light and the wonderful colors are the main features of this very harmonious composition. I like it quite a lot. TFS!

Hi Pat
I really loved Rob's shot in the WS. But I love this picture as well...Seen quite a few shots by now of the painted hills, but none that show the patch of green in the BG...almost like an oasis in a desolate landscape. Of course the painted hills are excellent in fine light. The other WS of the Featherstones is great as well! How's Larry now?
Best Regards

Nice variation of colors. The green is perhaps the less visible one, but at least it exists, which gives a bit of life to this geological landscape.
All the best,

Hello Pat,
I have found that the location where you stood and captured this very colorful image is the hardest location to catch the colors and shapes of the hillsides as they truly appear when you are standing before them. The lighting seems to either darken too much, or the ligh overexposes the back ridges of Caroll Mountain. But, here it is, the perfect image showing all of the detail and vegetation of the Painted Hills---
You are correct, that is a great capture of yourself and Larry in the workshop. The image reminds me of you two last year when we were all out at the lake; Happy As Larks You Were...
I hope you and Larry have A Great Weekend...

Hello Pat
Stunning landscape and great light. The colours are awesome and you respected well the rule of thirds. I like the diversity and the variations of colours of that landscape. The shapes are excellent too and the note useful. Good work!
Best regards

Hello Pat! I mean the workshops are just great, you must have had a ball together. Nevertheless, you also did "serious" stuff meaning concentrating on the photos (I don't find this easy when you do photo stuff with other people altough I mean this is just fun and no competition but rather sharing things with others). Great light, warm light, a light that only complements the pale yellow and brings out the full beauty of the area. What a treat that continues in 2009 ... All my best from my mountain, sitting in my cottage, drinking wine and making raclette soon etc. Barbara.

I see here you are back to this wonderful place, and so did I. It's a very wonderful place for so many photo opportunities. Though it's simular yet the can be very different POV and composition, and all look fantastic. I see many of them here but all are not the same. I like the large view here showing the overall impression of the area. Great colors and composition. Thanks

Hi Pat,
Beautiful image full of unique colors and textures.
Hardly what one thinks of when imagining Oregon's dense forrest and snow capped peaks.
The vivid blue sky really brings this stunning landscape to life.

Although many pictures of the Painted Hills have been posted to TE, I never bore of seeing them, Pat. The richly saturated colours and layers are quite captivating. You found an excellent POV for this shot and composed it well. I will have to go there one day myself to photograph them. Cheers . . . David

Pat,
are getting the hang of this place, finally? I can't wait to go back there in June and I hope to have the same green patch that you got there in the far background to enhance the contrast betwenn the starkness of the hills. Wonderful light conditions, although the left part on the hills has a slight touch of overexposure or is just the abscence of the shadow to demark stronger the folds of these hills?
