Winter in Flanders J - X Photo

Photographer’s Note

Friday morning minus 10 degree Celsius, a wonderful morning but a morning with a lot fog.
Around the clock of ten, I saw the sun through the fog, I took my car and was as a hunter look for a good picture.
I took more than hundred pictures on different place taken, maybe later more of this images.
A pity for us nature the lovely nature was a result of the bad condition of the air, these air come from Germany and perhaps further out of the East countries, also a little bit of us own industrial in Belgium.
In Flanders be allowed to the cars maximum 90km/h or 60 mile this for the smog.

Photochemical smog
In the 1950s a new type of smog, known as photochemical smog, was first described.
This forms when sunlight hits various pollutants in the air and forms a mix of inimical chemicals that can be very dangerous. A photochemical smog is the chemical reaction of sunlight, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere, which leaves airborne particles (called particulate matter) and ground-level ozone.

Nitrogen oxides are released by nitrogen and oxygen in the air reacting together under high temperature such as in the exhaust of fossil fuel-burning engines in cars, trucks, coal power plants, and industrial manufacturing factories. VOCs are released from man-made sources such as gasoline (petrol), paints, solvents, pesticides, and biogenic sources, such as pine and citrus tree emissions.

Un coin de Flandre que j'aime beaucoup mais que je n'ai jamais vu en période de grand froid. C'est encore plus beau qu'en été. Un excellent travail avec un POV bien choisi, une belle perspective et des détails très bien captés. Somptueux.

The diagonal line of the canal and of the path is an asset to the composition. The trees are framing well the scenery. The point of view leads our eyes to infinity which is giving depth and perspective to the photo. The picture is clear and precise. Daar is de foto waar ik naar zat uit te kijken: eigenaardig dat we dezelfde dag op bijna dezelfde plaats waren. Het is weer een prachtige realisatie met duidelijk de jhm handtekening. Alles staat perfect zoals het moet; de kleuren zijn heel aantrekkelijk. Kortom een schitterende compositie! Wel erg dat dit op het eerste zicht mooie beeld dat we dit weekend hadden niet zo onschuldig is als het lijkt; dank voor de nota over photochemical smog. Ik heb weer iets bijgeleerd. Groetjes.

Hoi John,

Ah, ik hoor voor het eerste dat dit koudefront deels te wijten is aan vervuiling!! Ja, ik kan me er op een of andere manier wel bij voorstellen.
Dit is wel je favoriete foto-plek geloof ik, want ik heb dit perspectief al eerder voorbij zien komen met deze rij bomen. Maar ja, het is een mooie positie, ook zeker met de sneeuw erop!

This kind of PoV and compo, so characteristic of you, makes me think that you are like a very good chef - serving many times the same dish doesn't mean at all that the meal is less delicious. Actually the metaphor isn't so perfect because you don't exactly repeat yourself and that is quite evident here, where the frost produced a stunning effect. Congratulations!

Simpelweg schitterend hoe je dit allemaal in het perspectief hebt gezet.

These long boulevards with rows of trees give and infinite sense of the depth an distance, a type of landscape we don't have here, but when all that is enriched by the frost all around grass and trees becomes a masterpiece of beauty.

Hallo John,

Ik kan me voorstellen dat je in dit schitterende winterlandschap binnen de kortste keren een paar honderd foto’s hebt gemaakt. En het moet ook wel snel want dit duurt nooit langer dan een paar dagen. Vandaag was het tenminste alweer een grauwe grijze dag met volop dooi. Schaatsen moest vandaag weer op de kunstijsbaan en dat is toch wel even wat anders dan hier op deze rechte vaart door het Vlaamse landschap.

This is a fantastic winter image! The lighting and colors are outstanding with fine sharpness and DOF. The angle of the shot works well giving the scene a good sense of depth and direction. The pathway leads the eye through the shot nicely. The iced trees form a great repeating pattern throughout the shot.

Very pure image- both composition and white balance are supreme! I also like perspective - road and trees perfectly underline the direction of watching this image. Beautiful winter!

The blue sky makes a perfect background for theses white frozen trees, and the canal seems to be frozen too! Nice view also for the frost of the grass in the foreground.

Wonderful winter shot in such fine sunshine. The perspective is very strong, as usual in your canal photos. Here, the long shadows are what appeal to me most, as they reach across the frozen water. The frost on the grass and trees is almost unreal, a sight one can never see here in Australia. But also we have very little smog! You have been rewarded for so many photos on one bright morning, with this gem.

Hi John,
Probably an unusual sight in Belgium, I hope the ice here is thick enough for skating (at least 10 centimeters). This frosty perspective is very attractive and particularly I like the lines the shadows are making across the ice. They continue very fine in the trees across the canal!

Fascinating mix of diagonals and the shadows making counter-diagonals. The parallelism of the frosted trees and the frosted vegetation in the fg is lovely. Great use of minimal colors, too. The smog is barely noticeable.

Hi John, I love the freshness of this scene - the empty road and the fairy-like trees, as well as the crisp, clear foreground. Perhaps a lone humsan figure in the distance would have enhanced the mood of the photo, but it's great anyway.

Hi, John,

This is indeed a special image. I like very much views that contain a strong vanishing point. This one is superb in that respect. You've done a wonderful thing to place that vanishing point where you have, in the middle of the frame vertically, but near the right edge.

What makes the vanishing point so special here is the several different lines that converge, each interesting in its own regard. The path on the right, the frozen grasses, the frozen pond, and finally (and most specially) the frosted trees.

I like your discussion about air pollution in the photographer's note. (And you got the main points exactly right!) But I don't see the connection of the air pollution problem with your photo. The visibility here seems spectacularly good (which means that the particle levels during shooting were low).
