Photographer’s Note
A rare opportunity to see inside a brick kiln while they were loading the mud before sealing everything off and lighting the fire. The brick cart was perfectly balanced and easy to push even when fully loaded with mud bricks. The architecture of the oven itself was beautiful. These walls are probably four feet thick. At the other end of the kiln, they were removing brick which had already been fired. You could still feel the heat as the bricks cooled down. A rare insight into a basic function in China where most structures are made from concrete or brisk. This is very hard work and the workers were very kind to give us a look inside their jobs and their lives.
