Photographer’s Note

Skiffs moored at the Seattle Wooden Boat Center located at the south end of Lake Union. One could spend all day there photographing the abundance of restored and partially restored wooden crafts which are moored and on the docks. These skiffs are rigged for rowing and sailing. Note the cutout amidship on each for placing daggerboards*, and the gudgeons* on their transoms into which rudders can be affixed.

Hull designs on these skiffs are "lapstrake". The planks of wood which make up their hulls are overlapped above each other from bottom to gunwall. Those familiar with piloting lapstrake boats realize that they have more stability than flat-bottomed boats. The horizontal planks in this style of hull absorb and deflect the energy of the water which provides additional stabilization. These are ideal boats for having fun on Puget Sound, the inland sea next to which Seattle is situated.

*See daggerboard and pintles and gudgeons.
