Photographer’s Note
Mount Shuksan in the Cascade Mountain range, at sunset. The location of the photo is the appropriately named Picture Lake, right at the Mount Baker ski area. The lake is perfectly positioned to get a great view of the mountain, and has likely been photographed many times. I would have liked to get closer to the water but it is roped off to prevent people from damaging the fragile ecosystem. This area gets some of the heaviest accumulations of snow anywhere - a few years ago they recorded over 90 feet (about 27 meters) of snow in one winter! Merry Christmas everyone!

Hi Alvin,
Excellent framing of the reflection in that gap in the foreground grasses. I like that nearly everything here apart from the main subject is in silhouette.
Cheers!

it's more contrasted than your usual shots of lakes and mounts
different, not bad, the silhouettes of trees with this harder contrast are good looking,
different and excellent

Hi Alvin,
The reflections in the water are assets to the comnposition. The trees are framing well the lake. The point of view takes our eyes toward Mount Shuksan. The light of the sunset is enhancing the colors of the scenery. Have a nice day.

Hello Alvin, Excellent reflective shot. Timing was certainly a factor for you to capture the sunset shot. With your high f stop you were sure to get good depth with the shot. Did you experiment with lightening the foreground a bit? Not sure if that would have a positive effect or not on the darkness there. Anyway, I think it is a great picture. BTW, my son in law, who lives in Portland, OR, rides his dirt bike in that area. Cheers. Roger

Strong contrasts and deep rich colors render this an excellent image. Also note the clarity and sharpness. Very well seen and TFS. Gerald

Hi Alvin,
great composition with a fine layering of the well lighted part and its reflection and the dark row of trees and the foreground vegetation.
Have a great Christmas,

Hi Alvin
By keeping the land dark the mountain really shows up well. It's hard to go wrong at Picture Lake.

Hello Alvin,
Super reflections, and your compo and exposure, with the shadowed trees, enhances the strength of the mountain.

Hi Alvin,
Maybe this is my first bad deed for 2009 but I have to confess that the contrast is just too big,the shadows are simply black and regarding the exposure, the photo is made up of two different shots: a very dark one and a light one, without any midtones.
I think you are pushing your new camera too far and you are relying too much on it.
On the other hand, the composition is perfect, in my opinion.
Have a great new year!
Thanks,
Nelu

Very nice landscape and beautiful composition. I like the reflection of the mountain in the calm lake. The tress on the left give a good addition. Well done.

Hi Alvin:
Nice shot of Shuksan and Picture Lake. The composition is perfectly balanced--you generally do a fabulous job of that. My two issues are first that the foreground and trees are very dark--I'm sure it was a high dynamic range--and second that little bit of pond scum or ice or whatever. If only it were clear still water instead. (Obviously that second issue is very minor). But otherwise, it's another fantastic Alvin contribution, and one to make the rest of us jealous.

Hi Alvin,
For such a blue sky i went to this place, hoping to see something like this. Rain and clouds was all that i got. Seeing this it makes me jealous, maybe only for this i want to go back...one day, to see and shoot this myself.
Although there are some extreme dark portions inside, it's all about the mountain and his reflection and that is just wonderful. I know where you stood, i also stood here ;-)
Wonderful light on Shuksan, really good work...
Have a nice weekend,
Henk

I was just there about a month before you! I didn't get any shots quite this lovely though. I love the dark sillouettes against those super saturated colors, WOW! Aren't the views from there stunning??
