This sculpture was made in 1982 by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal. The Monument to the Drowned, or simply "The Hand" as it is known, depicts five human fingers partially emerging from sand and has become a symbol of Punta del Este and one of Uruguay's most recognizable landmarks.

Very interesting note and this monument. Fine idea and nice presentation. I think I have seen something similar somewhere in Chile but I can't remember where it was. Tanks for sharing
