This is the cemetary in the village of San Juan de Iris. The president of the village was kind enough to give us visitors a tour. One of the items she showed us for some reason was the cemetary, where she spoke of their various traditions and beliefs about the afterlife.
This village was particularly welcoming in large part due to the kindness of the president, who dropped everything upon our arrival and proudly showed us her town. I will post a photo of her soon.
San Juan de Iris is a village of only a couple hundred people located 4 hours drive East of Lima (depending on how you drive on the mountain roads). There is a museum adjacent to the town plaza that houses several mummies and other archaeological remains that were found nearby. The town plaza is under construction, but looks like it will be really nice after completion - it boasts of a "gazebo" in the middle that is in the shape of a traditional woman's hat. That's all I remember about this place other than the fact that their citizens were extremely friendly.
