Photographer’s Note
The Tambopata National Reserve is a 275,000 hectare conservation unit created by the Peruvian government in 1990 to protect the watersheds of the Tambopata and Candamo rivers.
This Switzerland-sized area of pristine forest contains 1300 bird species, 32 parrot species (10% of the world's total), 200 mammal species, 1200 butterfly species and over 10,000 species of vascular plants.
You can reach the reserve from the town of Puerto Maldonado.
Even though the reserve is home to a multitude of wildlife it has also been scared by poaching and the animals, especially mamals, are very shy - however they are starting to return to the area. For birdlovers this place is a paradise and you are like to see many different kinds of parrots, tucans and more.
This picture was taken from our bungalow at Libertador Tambopata Lodge just as the sun was starting to set.
We stayed here for 2 nights and then moved on to Refugio Amazonas for 3 nights - a perfect length of stay in the jungle!
