| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This rather striking bird is called a Tiger Heron (Tigrisoma lineatum) for obvious reasons that its plumage is very similar in pattern to the fur of a tiger. These colours and stripes provide excellent camouflage in the reedy riverbanks where it lives.
The Tiger Heron can be found from Southern Mexico to northern Argentina. This particular photo was taken in the Tambopata Nature Reserve on the Rio Madre de Dios (Mother of God River), in south-eastern Peru. We were on a small, wooden raft looking for Giant Otters when we spotted this bird. We never saw any otters.
Image cropped a little and framed in Photoshop otherwise as taken. |
