Photographer’s Note
This is from Lake Sandoval, along the Madre de Dios River in the Amazon Basin in Peru. My son and I spent 11 days in Peru this summer, mostly in the Andes and trekking the Inca Trail but we also spent 2 days in the Amazon.
We were 45 minutes downriver from the city of Puerto Maldonado at the Reserva Amazonica lodge. Lake Sandoval is a lake just off the river that is a preserve with a large family of giant river otters living in it. We spent an afternoon exploring the shoreline in a dugout and watched sunset from the lake.
