Photographer’s Note
The Dusky-headed Parakeet (Aratinga weddellii) is a species of parrot found in the jungle of the western Amazon Basin. It is social, and usually found in pairs or small groups. When food is plentiful, it may form flocks of up to 100 members.
This photo shows the birds on a clay lick in the rainforest close to the Corto Maltes jungle lodge, near Puerto Maldonado on the Rio Madre de Dios. Consuming clay is believed to provide a mineral supplement and neutralise toxins in their diet.
