Photographer’s Note

"El Argentino"

This shot was taken during the festivities of "La Tunantada", in Ataura, a small village in the department of Junín. I took this picture a few days before the central day, which is celebrated on January 20th in Jauja.

"La Tunantada" is a big event: musicians play typical music, and people dressed with different clothes represent the Spanish colonizers. That's why they cover their faces with masks, like this one here: to look as white as the Spanish people :-)

In the background you can observe other caracters of "La Tunantada". It's a very special event with an interesting atmosphere which I liked a lot. People are also invited to dance with them, and of course, the beer flows! The people who want can buy beer, which is shared with everybody... So everybody drinks together to celebrate this day!

Each character has a name. The one you can see here is called "El Argentino" (in English "The Argentine") or also "El Arriero" (in English "The Carrier").

I like this photo because of it's composition (close-up with other characters in the background), it's bright colors and the sharpness.

I hope you'll like it too! (Critiques, comments or workshops are very welcome!)

Greetings,
Thomas
