It was a tough decision for me to post this photo, only because its been seen and photographed about 10 million times already!
The reason why i'm posting it is because I thought it would be cool to show you 'other' photos of Machu Picchu in the WS. I'll post 2 more today, and in my next post I'll put another 2 in the WS that HOPEFULLY most people have not seen of this famous location.
Obviously as you can see, the day we had after our 5 day trek wasn't exactly the prettiest, but it did allow for some atmospheric mood i guess.
Please take a look at the WS photo's for views in Machu Picchu that you don't normally see. This is a famous viewpoint because there's a "picture perfect" landing area thats wide open - so everyone stands here.
Hope you like them

Love the main photo; love the WS photos...even though this main view has been seen many times before, there is something slightly different each time. You can't have the exact same clouds more than once, right?! Speaking of clouds, I really like the cloudy views here. They add a feeling of mystery and a sense of the impending doom that befell this civilization. Enough babbling...great job! The people look so tiny, too...

The main picture shows the ruins bright and clearly while the white clouds are surrounding the mountain. That's a great view that I really like. Also the 'altered image # 1' is like that. Like views of a secret world. Of course Machu Picchu has been a secret for a very long time.
When I was there long time ago (in the month of July), there weren't that many clouds. So I haven't pictures like these here.
On the view on the 'altered image # 2' the fog is entering the archaeological site completely. I think a bit too much for me to enjoy the visit of Machu Picchu. But the picture of course is wonderful.
Best regards, Paul

Sure that the main image has been seen hundreds of time and sure that the WS image are more original
But nevertheless, this image is excellent, with the fog climbing against the mountain
i love it ;)

la magica atmosfera di Machu Picchu racchiusa in una splendida foto.
Bellissimo pov, si riesce ad apprezzare tutta l'antica città e la sua collocazione.

May already be seen but still great to Watch. Here we have a closer view and mist makes the difference. Nice WS too, well done.
jadesgran (5350) 2013-09-26 13:22
This is a fascinating picture. One I never tire of looking at.I love the mist swirling around the mountain - gives it a feel of mystery.
Excellent ! T. F.S.

Ciao e buona notte

Nice to be your neighbor today. Ah this takes me back to so many years ago. The fogs really give a nice moody atmospher to this ruin, yet the visibility is still good. The POV is also nice from high up looking down to the whole area. Also a pleasure to see photo of this place, especially one with good quality.

this place is just our dream to be there and see it on our own eye. This must be an amazing experience and not forgettable. Wonderfully executed and presented to us such a fabulous picture. Perfectly well done. Tfs.
All the best,

Hello Craig. What a great view of the world of interest. The weather is very typical of this area. Well seen and presented.
dkmurphys (49262) 2013-09-26 22:47
Truly spectacular! You are one of the lucky ones that saw that amazing place. Always trust your point of view, never mind the other millions, it is about your taste and feelings behind every image.
jjcordier (76344) 2013-09-26 23:16
Tes trois photos du Machu Picchu sont toutes dignes d'intérêt. Ma préférence va quand même à la version du post principal pour l'excellent POV et la brume envahissant doucement le site (ou s'estompant?).
emka (78876) 2013-09-26 23:17
Hi Craig, this classic view is the one I like most. And only few people! How it is possible? Was it early in the morning, before the whole crowd came. And these fogs coming up, wonderful. For me, it is the most breath taking view in the world. The workshops are lovely too. I know the places,

a really magnificent and panoramic view of this section of Machu Picchu with the photos in the WS to complete even more our knowledge about the place.Dreamily the view as the presentation and i can say that can easily 'participate' in the exploration of the place via your lens.

I don't think you should ever worry about posting somewhere that is popular. Each photographer applies his/her own stamp and the weather conditions or time will always create different effects. I think this is an amazing shot. The overview of this ancient site is clear and so full of information for most of us who have never been there. The swirling clouds add the sense of mystery, maybe just a slight sense of trepidation, as the whole threatens to be cloaked in mist.
I marvel at the determination of people to build a city so high. Just imagine the effort!
Have a great day,
Kugart (1778) 2013-09-27 1:54
Spectacular shot of this place. This is actually the first time I have seen a photo from here,so thanks for that. Colours are fantastic and the rising mist is very atmospheric . Like the WS as well and looking forward to your next post from here.
ikeharel (57182) 2013-09-27 2:18
An impressive place, Craig, I had seen a number of photos from this place, but this one has a unique addition to it: you had been lucky to have the fog "enveloped" the mountain from side's - and yet allow a fabulous view of the old ruins.
Excelent photojob done, as usual as you do, view from a high POV is most exquisite with clear details on.
Have a nice friday,
Noel_Byrne (24263) 2013-09-27 4:25
It may have been seen before, but this is unique in its own right, and I would never tire of seeing scenes of a place as magical as this. The mist adds a whole dimension to the scene, and you have a really encompassing shot of the town here, giving it a great idea of the scale of this place. Nice one on the workshops too, my own personal favorite is the second one posted in the workshop, totally new view.
Thanks as always

beautiful classic shot of this famous place. I like the workshop photos but I have always preference for the classic shots for some reason. In spite of what you say this place have not been that frequent guest on TE but may be elswhere yes.
I like the fog presence. Although complete clarity would allow to see more of the context, the fog creates a nice effect of mystery. And it does not cover everything: it allows us to see a lot anyway.
It is a magical place I really like your picture. May be I would consider sharpening it a bit more. It is great and the slightly dreamy touch adds to the mystical mood anyway.
This is definitely a Bucket list place for most people I guess.
chawax (19392) 2013-09-27 7:10
An incredible place ! The clouds add a mysterious atmosphere that fits very well with these ruins.
Have a nice week end,

Hi dear Craig
You captured so dramatic secne in perfect timing and light control. Fogs play an important role.
Sharp and clear image as usual.
All the best and have a good day! TAKERO

Thank you for a wonderfully interesting note and a fabulous trio of photographs!
All of these wonderful pictures convey a sense of ancient history, solitude, altitude and severe exposure to the elements - how wonderful that ancient peoples should have built a city so high in the sky! This picture shows buildings on a small plain but one of your workshop pictures shows steep terraces too and the other shows the place surrounded in deep mist.
Please, Craig, do not feel that pictures of this place are by any means hackneyed or commonplace - some pictures might be but all three of these photographs of yours portray exactly what you saw when you and Tosca visited this amazing place and they are truly stunning. Oh, how I would love to visit Machu Picchu!
Fabulous light, colours and sharpness and bang-on exposure too.
SnapRJW (31119) 2013-09-28 2:58
How did I miss this shot Craig? I don't care if it is the 'usual' view, it is very atmospheric with the low cloud surrounding the site. This has the effect of developing the viewers conception of the location and adding mood. The scale is also well documented through the presence of the people. An expansive and good shot which shows the extent of the ruins. The WS's add further background detail and highlight the clouds and textures well. Have a fine weekend. Rosemary

Along with Iguassu Falls & Easter Island this locale is high on my bucket list if I ever make it to South America. Incredible repetition of the terraces. I like the graphism of the dark peak top left against the lighter toned mist. You were lucky to have the tourists concentrated in one area and not walking in front of you as so often happens. Tfs!
annjackman (19603) 2013-09-28 6:19
Buckets of atmosphere here. I love the way that the cloud is shrouding this ancient site. Excellent photography.
Kind Regards, Ann

you wrote the day wasn't the prettiest, but I think you couldn't have better weather to create unique mood of the scene. The view of Machu Picchu is clear while the clouds cover only the slope of the mountain and help you to make the composition so spectacular. No matter how often we've alredy seen pictures from this POV your presentation is superb for me!Great how you were able to cature the green color so bright and well saturated despite cloudy weather.
Best wishes from sunny Santorini

I love this misty sight of the Machu Picchu.Excellent pov and exposure.Quite a mystical place to be in for photography.Very well done.TFS.

This place is really fantastic, and this fog gives a very nice atmosphere to the image! The colors are perfect, very well saturated! Wonderful composition! Great job!

interesting reportage from famous place in Peru. Good 3 shots. Fine high POV you had. Attractive old ruins between the mountains in clouds. Photos I like.
Have a nice day.

Trying to get caught up from the last couple of weeks, and it looks like I've missed some real beauties...this of course being one of them! No matter how many times this may have been seen, it's still impressive and a pleasure to view when it's been photographed and presented in such a fine manner like this.
For me, those clouds are the real winner here, the atmosphere they carry with this shot is amazing, adding to the mystique and power of this location. This must have really been something else to experience, I can only imagine what great memories you have taken from here...and your pictures will make them live forever in the forefront of your mind. Awesome shot, one of my new favorites from your gallery! Enjoy the rest of the evening. Take it easy.
Cheers from Phoenix,

Wow! Looks like you were on top of the world! Awesome capture of this world famous ruins. I like the effect of the clouds on the mood. Great pov and nice details. Very well done, tfs.
I was walking around among the herd of wild mustangs while taking their pictures. They are wild but people friendly especially if you bring apples or carrots but against the law...if caught.
