Photographer’s Note
Yes… I’ve been to Machu Picchu ...
Her name is Fernanda.
And the mountain behind her is the ever famous Huayna Picchu, a mountain the lost city of Machu Picchu is situated against.
And now, you folks have all the rights to ask the question: Who’d give a rat’s ass about Fernanda?
Yet another dumb photo of a human face called by the accomplished experts on TE ‘The portrait’ !
(I won’t even mention the Huayna Picchu… IT MUST be on every fotka from Machu Picchu, right ?
Oh, well... Fernanda is fifteen years old and she just climbed that mountain to the very top of it !!!!!
There is an ancient Inca trail reaching the summit of the peak (several hundreds of seriously uneven stone steps) and the whole trick is: Don’t look down when you climb up or do step down… For God’s sake…Don’t look down !!!
Just watch the tips of your shoes, OK ?
Fernanda had a wet, messy hair, incredibly rosy cheeks, she smelled sweat all around, she was breathing heavily and she burst into laughing when some weird guy from Canada asked her for a picture of her to be taken.
Fernanda… You are my hero and you are one of these rare occurrences when a photo has THE REASON to be posted on our site !
………………
Fernanda is from the República de El Salvador, from the city (what else ?) San Salvador.

Hi George,
OK, so Fernanda looks like a person who you just want to smile along with. Everything about her looks so genuine and she's a perfect candidate to be immortalized by your lens. I guess what I don't get, or like really, is what your wide angle did to her head. If you don't mind me trying to put this gut feeling into words I just find that it distracts from the idea of Fernanda and calls my attention to the photographer somehow. I don't intuit that that was your intent. I guess my 7-year old daughter put it better than I could when she walked into the study, looked over my shoulder thinking it was one of mine and blurted out "Whoa, what happened there? Do you think you can you fix that?" I'm not pretentious enough to claim any correct-ness in what I'm observing here but I sometimes think my daughter could teach John Szarkowski a thing or two. Yours in respectful honesty.
Cheers!
Bob G.
