Photographer’s Note

This is a second of three really stunning (or so I think) photos from the fireworks (bombardetes) of the eve of the principle day of the festival in Huamachuco, which is symbolized by the pennant (gallardete). So I may as well just copy the note from the first!

The fiesta in Huamachuco, having Pre-Hispanic roots, is a month-long affair, with various events occurring throughout the month, and symbolized by the red, white and red gallardete, or pennant, put up at the beginning of the fiesta, taken down at the end, and symbolizing the entire fiesta. The eve of the principal day is one heck of a party, with bands all over the place, lots of drinking (of wine, beer and chicha). Castillos, or firework towers are set up throughout the Plaza d'Armas (Main Square). These are quite unlike the fireworks that we have in North America (wait for future photos of mine showing these), but to kick off the celebrations, they set off a whole bunch of fireworks more similar to ours, and my balcony was a perfect location to get a few photos of these, with the gallardete in front.
