Cajamarca, in Northern Peru, is off the beaten track for most of the "gringo" travellers. Fortunately, I would say. In this way the town can live its own life, maintaining its real traditions, without the "contamination" caused by the mass tourism, regrettably present in cities like Arequipa and especially Cusco. Cajamarca is a relatively quiet colonial town, with some beautiful baroque churches (as the Cathedral, in the background of this picture), many old palaces and nice cobblestone streets. And with a lot of indigenous people all around, particularly in the market area. It is difficult to believe that this lively and jovial town was the place where Pizarro has beaten down the mighty Inca Empire, by capturing and later executing Atahualpa, the last Inca ruler...
