Photographer’s Note

When Spaniards arrived in this region there was a little hill used by natives how a cemetery, this tradition was preserved and a Spanish colonial town was build at side of it. --- This region is ever hit by big earthquakes and in 1970 a very big one made a tragedy. A big amount of ice in the top of Huascaran mountain fell down in the LLanaganuco lakes and brought mud, ice and giant stones to this valley where Yungay city was located, that big amount of mud, ice and rocks killed most of population of that town and hit this little hill and almost destroyed it, sepultures were opened with the hit and dead people were put out. Around 20,000 people died that day and only a few amount of people who was visiting this cemetery got to survive. There was another group of children in a stadiun and some of them got to escape too. In this photo we can see a group of Peruvian tourists praying and paying homage to that people who is buried around this cemetery. Jesus is watching the Huascaran, ever so close, ever so danger, ever so big and beautiful..
