Photographer’s Note

The regal bird, a snowy egret, was one of many, many species that I photographed on a trip deep into the Peruvian Amazon. We had a huge houseboat and went upstream from Iquitos on the main stem of the Amazon River. Even here, thousands of miles from its delta into the Atlantic, it is a mile wide. This land is almost prehistoric, so remote and virtually untouched by modern man. We were in a immense protected reserve and the bird life was incredible. Sometimes it looked like I was seeing decorated Christmas trees, but instead of ornaments the decorations were colored birds.
