Photographer’s Note
This is an image from Diwali in Georgetown, Guyana. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated annually in October or November.
Guyana is quite ethnically diverse, and the population along the coast is almost equally split between Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese, with a small Chinese minority. (Guyana's interior is dominated by the native peoples, referred to collectively as Amerindians.) Because of this diversity of ethnicities, efforts have been made to officially recognize the major holidays of all dominant religions, including Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity.
