[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
when I joined TE in March 2007, my first post showed the first day of 2007 as I saw it, so I thought it would be appropriate to show also the last day of 2007. here it is, view on the volcano Tungurahua that has been active since 1999 and had major eruption on 16 August 2006. the mountain looms over the small thermal springs town Baņos and obediently belches smoke and ash every 20 minutes. it would be a photographers paradise if only the clouds would stay away... we were treated with this view on 31 January of 2007 at about 3000m on the Northern slope of the volcano (we did want to go up the Southern slope where the crater is, but on the way there our 4x4 cowardly got stuck in the lava field from earlier eruptions). the locals say that the Tungurahua ("Little Hell" or "Throat of Fire" depending on whom you talk to) is getting increasingly active, but every night was cloudy and we did not get to see if there's any fire. still, for a city girl like me the view was impressive as it was.

glad to be back from a two week trip to Ecuador, but DON'T ask about the 36 hours we spent trying to get from Quito to New York City, the story about broken plane engines, brakes on the bus and huge lines is still too raw to tell...

Hi there, Kristine! And welcome back in one piece! Kristaps in one piece too? LOL!
As a sky-freak I can't but love this view.
IMNAAHO (In My Not At All Humble Opinion, take note!) a very difficult technical shot in terms of lighting, which you managed to catch VERY well.
The line between overexposed skies and underexposed surroundings below, is very thin under this type of circumstances, but you didn't cross it and I like what I see.
I don't think it's possible to do any better in this case. The alternative would be HDR, with 2 or 3 different exposures, but that crap turns any picture into a (bad) drawing and that's why I hate it. So, once again : I like this impressive view.
Thanks for sharing, I'll see you soon.
Ciao,
Fulvio.

Hola and welcome back Kristine,
Impressive image and excellent composition. Beautiful view of the volcano Tungurahua. The clouds in the background are just amazing. The light and the colors are also very attractive. Like your note
Bravo!!

chau, chau :)

love this rendition of tungurahua: the clouds appearing to be growing out of the mountain and mixed with the actual volcanic smoke... i like the scale accent with the barely visible house in the foreground too.

well seen and presented

Hello Kristine,

Glad to see you made it back from your trip to Ecuador. Looks like you had a wonderful trip. Sorry to hear about all the clouds but for some reason it really works with the plume or dark ask coming out of the caldera. I also like the little house you were able to capture. I bet their insurance is out the roof!

Happy New Year,

Mel

Hi Kristine,
congratulations for this shot, itīs very sharp and light is well balanced. Volcanos are fascinating, Iīve posted a similar photo from Indonesia, but unfortunately not in this quality.

Hi Kristine,

Wonderful shot of the last day of the year in Banos, near Tungurahua. Very impressive view. It reminds me my staying in Banos in September 1999. I spent three days in the jungle near Puyo and came in the afternoon back to Banos. The inhabitants walked in procession with the figure of St. Mary. The next day early in the morning we were astonished to see the yellow smoke from Tungurahua. It was just the beginning of its activity. Two weeks after all the people were evacuated.

Thank you for sharing this picture

regards
Małgorzata

Hello Kristine,

An engaging note accompanying a tremendous photograph. I had seen photographs of the volcano Tungurahua, and I am gratified to see such a beautiful photograph of it now. The crest of the mountain is seen with razor sharp resolution. The only constructive criticism I would have is to maximize the size, even if you have to cut down on the frame and the quality level with which you save it (e.g. 8-9 on a scale of 1-12).

Warm regards,

Bulent

Nice notes Kristine and nice image to mention the least...
Though I am late in viewing it but this one is a shot worth viewing...

Hi Kristine,
Your superb light management has given us magical clouds that often seen but seldom captured; those lying in the shadows of the valley are particularly elusive. The gods are clearly on your side, giving you a view of the mountain that coincided with the puff of smoke. Too bad they didn't stick around for the trip home.
Wishing the two of you health, love & joy in ther coming year, Pat

Hi Kristine,

What an impressive shot! The colours and composition are superb. I also like the layers which were created by sky, mountains, clouds...It must have bees a great trip! Last day in a year in Equador sounds really great.
You have chosen superb frame and the way of presentation of this photo. I like it a lot!

Greetings
Aga

PS. And now I go to your 1st photo on TE;)

I actually love the clouds in this photo. They really add a great mood to this shot. Especially the billowing grey ones on the left side. Showing the activeness of this volcano.

A beautiful blue sky, and that one little house in the front.

Cheers,
David

Hi, Kristine. I remember looking up at this lovely volcano from a hot spring in Baņos many years ago. And it looked just like this. You captured the beauty of the sky and the magnificent landscape perfectly. Thanks for the memories. Best, -Hugh

Hello Kristine,

So. I was thinking only I used this header but finally saw that you too... Your photo is very provocative for cotton collectors. I like dark part of it with superb contrasts with blue and white.

Friendly Regards,

Kristine,

There is some really fine detail buried in the shadows on this image. It is a powerful shot; it really shows the force of nature, great capture.

Greg

so... you got this one too! really lucky... it must have been something to watch this...

Very impressive capture with the clouds in this formation. Great depth to this scene Kristine. The building in the frame is well placed and gives scale. Well done.

Hello Kristine,
Don't completely omit those travel horror stories from your your DVD travelogue, your book, or your travel article. These travel tales from hell wiil be an excellent addition to your stories. You probably would rather forget them for the time being, but these "snafus" always get people's attention. This is an awesome shot with those huge clouds of smoke bellowing from this volcano. The townspeople probably have the same attitude as the people of Naples at the base of Mount Vesuvius do; a stoic sense of fatalism, except that Banos would be much easier to evacuate. Outstanding and dramatic photo of the unstoppable forces of nature!
Stan

Hi, Kristine -

Browsing through your gallery and spotted this one. I happen to think that the clouds blending with the smoke makes this shot more interesting. And the mist or clouds beneath the mountain is incredible. Great handling of tricky light, too.

Best,
Dan
