Photographer’s Note

While on the way to visit one of the highland communities near Quisapincha, an oncoming truck refused to stay to his side of the road, causing my companion to swerve and get the vehicle stuck in a muddy rut. After about 45 minutes of useless efforts among the two of us and three women who had been working down the road, we were able to get in touch with the cabildo (local leader) in the community of Illagua Chaupiloma, who was waiting for us. He then arrived with a handful of men and women from the community, whereupon everyone pitched in to lift, push and pull until the truck was extracted. This photo was taken during the final struggle just as our friends finished the task.
