Photographer’s Note

I was volunteering in Ecuador and I worked with "chicos de la calle". These young people live under a bridge in the city of Cuenca. They use drugs such as contact glue, cocaine and marijuana. The two girls live with about 25 guys and 2 or 3 other girls. The reality of the "children of the street" is a big problem there and very hard to see.

Wow. There is something quite powerful about this photo. I can't quite put my finger on it... that middle girl's expression is sweet and sort of innocent, while the other two (and especially the boy) have too many years of hard living on their faces. The boy's pose looks at first like he's concealing something in an inner pocket... of course a gun was my first thought... but then you see he's just a scrawny guy drowning in his coat. The background really works well too. Normally I hate this kind of harsh flash but it really suits the mood and looks fine, technically. I wish you had gotten closer and tried more and different things with the composition though. And that plastic bag is too distracting. Good though.

Really interesting and powerful picture, because it shows us a very unknown reality of Latin America and because the image itself: those eyes looking to the camera and saying a lot of things. And the green urban background is a good frame for the image because it helps us to imagine the hard enviroment they live in. Good image. regards.

its a great picture. the girl in the middle looks beautiful and clean, i can hardly believe shes from the street ! but thats life there - too bad !
