I think that with the wide angle lens you were lucky to capture this shot.
W/o a wide angle the picture would not have been so nice.
I like the contrast of the horse with the rock formation, the only thing i would have changed wold have been the 1/3 rule with the horse.

see :)) your radiant horsie is gaining popularity here already... and you were hiding it in your drawer for so long... horsie wanted OUT! ;) love this shot. the reddish horse JUMPS out from the rocky background and, in my opinion, looks quite syrreal in these settings. a nice one!

Beautiful shot.Very strange the way we take sometimes to come back to home..I'm glad you don't have time to change your lens,because I also like this rock formation,and I think give to the shot a special effect with its colour and its diagonal lines.Stormy day this one too,I've already seen in another shots from Ecuador that you posted wath a big big anvil clouds of storms it had..

The rock make some fascinating perspective lines for this image, this is certainly one of the best Horse pictures I have seen on TE.
and the way you place the horse in the image makes makes it even more impressive, third rule is for them who needs help... you don't

Sometimes things just happen like they should, you not having the time to change lenses gives us this most unusual view of the lovely horse. Hope it was not all like this, as Dan mentions, he must have the skills of a goat:-). The wide angle gives a great dynamic to the rocks and that bit of a dramatic sky complete the whole. I much prefer to see them outside than in competitions I have to say that...but it's a touching tribute Kristine and an outstanding catch, my compliments.

It looks almost like if you pasted the horse there! :) I know it is not the case. I will tell you: good thing you had your wide angle lens mounted and no time to change it. Free horse (though he is not totally free, by what he wears on is face - the name evades me right now...) so... free horse need free space around!
One of the asset of this photo, and this is entirely your responsibility, is how you framed the photo. The feeling we (I?) get is that the rock formation goes to the right, while the horse goes to the left. Two opposite directions. It's kind of tricky for the eyes, not knowing where they have to go. But it works wonderfully...
The mix of colors are nice too, but that doesn't pertain to you, I guess! :)
Small word about the frame you gave: I'm not a fan of this kind of shadow frame. I think your photo can stand solidly by itself without "frills". That being said, I am warning you: I've seen photos being sadly deleted for that very reason. I hope it won't happen to your photo. But be aware of that...

Hi Kristine, what an awesome encounter and cool shot. The rock is good but that horse made the shot. Shooting at 10mm, you were right on top of that horse. Very nice contrast between the horse and the rock, he really stands out here. Surprise shots like this are sometimes the best.

I read your note about Eight Belles. I love horse racing (see my first post), so had to do some googling after reading this. This is really sad, and won't put the sport in a favourable light. Hopefully it will put some more measures (better tracks etc.) in place to prevent this type of thing from happening again.

Hello Kristine! What an unsual photo with the horse trotting home. It looks a little sad somehow but maybe it is your note and Eight Belles that makes me feel that way. Your composition is really wildly beautiful with the animal deep down in your photo with plenty of space for these impressive rocks. Excellent! Barbara.

What I admire is the fullest use of wide angle to capture this beauty. Lucky you to have the wide lens still attached to your camera. I cannot put my finger as to which part I like best...the rock outcrop or the horse? The strata on the rocks converge towards the right only to be stopped by the vertical fall of the rock face, albeit small. And of course the horse literally jumps out of the screen against the dark rocks, moving, as it appears casually in the direction opposite to the rocks. I see Claire has already mentioned it in her critique, but that's what struck me when I first saw this picture. This IMO makes this shot so very attractive. An excellent capture!

Looking at this one and your follwoing post I have to say that both are outstanding good with the lines in the background leading the attention to the left portion of the image. The placement of the horse and the people on the next one is perfect, although I give a clear preference to this one here. Personal taste :-)

Hi Kristine,

simply fantastic! No wonder that it is already a favourite of so many! I have to add it to mine to. The wide angle does that final touch to already magical shot. High altitude, the most intriging rock formation, small glimps of gray sky and marvelous, really marvelous, accent of magnificent horse that feels with its vivid colour almost orange. It is simply perfect. My greates compliments!
