excellent portrait, one of the rare occasions when lack of eye contact actually emphasises the feeling of the shot. I like a lot how you've used the background colours as a frame, and how the tight composition creates a strong sense of presence. I'll leave emotional descriptions for those better equipped for that.
best,
Kristine

Hi Kristaps,
Would you like to do me a favor? Give some more sharpness on his face, when you see his one day beard and all his wrinkels much deeper than it's enough ;-)
But despite of the sharpening, it's a wonderful portrait. In deep thoughts, what is he thinking, wonderful placed in the frame.
But also that background works very good here, i like those two colours in the back but the blue of his jacket is dominant against them...perfect, i like it a lot.
Regards, Henk

Another excellent one, Kristaps.
Using those background colors as a frame is an absolute winner. Great job!
Cheers,
F.

Hello Kristap
Greaüt picture with fantastic compo and image. Really great work best regards ihsan

Spending 1st day of new year in Ecuardo observing people and capturing what you see!

What I like is your superb composition of this shot. All the different colors and the skin tone, from the choice of good composition from this pov. Although sharpness is probably due to handshake using 70-300mm lens.

Great work. TFS

Cheers, bill

It can't be denied, Kristaps..

Your fascination with the people, or... Shall I say: People's faces !!!

You must have found it bewildered enough to go for it... (Join the club...I'm the doorman in there!)

The very first step is done...
You've fallen in love...
And now dear buddy, time to go work...
Grab the books, study the classics, get to library and flip thru all those numerous albums with people's faces...
That's the ONE & ONLY way of get to know the subject...
Go to the great portraitists on the site: KevRyan, bantonbuju, NinaL, even me (???) (that is - if you have your vomit bag ready to use?)…
Get to know why their faces are ‘talking’ loud and clear, and your ones are… Hmmm… Yours are just present in there, in your photos, Kristaps…

I wish you all the fun on earth, dearest friend.
You deserved it.
You’ve made the first step !!!

Hi Kristaps,
Seems you went to Ecuador just for portraits. Looks sharp enough to me, but I realize there is no golden standard there. Shallow depth of field certainly makes his face stand out well. I was unsure about the bright and empty space that covers the left half when I first saw the thumbnail. I don't think the picture would lose much (and perhaps improve) if you cropped half of that, i.e., crop the left quarter. That aside, I like how you conveyed the mood without showing his eyes. Polonaise has given some sound advice, I see. Best wishes,
Hakan

Hello Kristaps,
You have a knack for creating very provactive portraits which are very natural and I always like the way that you pay a lot of attention to the background. The minimalistic background looks like an abstract painting circa about 1955. I don't like fiddling around too much with the background in Photoshop. I would rather capture it correctly in the camera like you did here. The man's expression is excellent. He is deep in his own thoughts and I like the way that he is looking downward to convey this. I agree with Henk, that the man's face needs just a smidgeon of sharpening. This is a great cultural portrait and you are very good at this type of photography. Great work!

Bonjour Kristaps,
un portrait très parlant de ces gens qui ont vécu et qui savent tellement de choses, ceetains auront développé la sagesse, d'autres la méchanceté.
Bien cadrée avec de la place devant lui.
Amicalement.
Daniel.

Hi Kristaps,

I was saying to Henk that I need to learn a lot about portraits. It's nice to see members posting some of them. I like this a lot and make sure that I'm taking advantage of your posts to improve my technique which is poor yet. Great work!
Regards,
Carlos

Hi Kristaps. Powerful portrait. It captures the enigma of the human condition- the ever thinking brain that makes us into what we are or could have been. Effective composition with his shoulder aligned with the linear separation of background colours. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Kristaps,
Wonderful portrait of this lovely old gentleman deep in his thoughts. I really like the placement of your subject way off to the right with a bit of his had cropped. The two tone background does alot for this well detailed image.
Regards, Tom

Hello Kristaps
Excellent close portrait. I like the way it is tightly cropped and I also think the dual white/red background brings a great simplicity to the theme.
Just wonder why you choose this song to illustrate... but that's another story :-)
