Hi Kristaps,
Okay it's at 450m/m, who cares. It's not easy to make real portriats in south-amercia from those people under perfect light conditions and posing acts. Of course the perspecte view is shifting if you are using long focal lenses for this kind of work but i don't think it's disturbing anything here. The bokeh is perfect, soft and smooth (a bit noise) and the blue colour in combination with her green hat is very lovely. I like tack sharp images on portraits so mybe it could be a bit more on her eyes, lips, nose and neackless, but that's just a minor thing. Maybe some softer skintones, but now i talk to much technical bla bla and studio work. This one is taken outside, so considering that you did very well and i like it a lot.

No.
Polonaise won't give you a hard time for it.
That's what longdong lenses are for... To be able to shorten the distance.

Polonaise won't give you hard time because this is your first one with the clearly visible - 'communication' factor included in the picture.
And believe or not - this is a HUGE plus towards quality of a photo.

Yet... There is still a long way to Tipperary !

Hi Kristaps,

the purpose of the shot was reached. The result you present here is really good considering the 450mm. The image vivid and the focus is on her which is most important. I don't care about the little noise and actually it works fine on this one. I just would like to see her eyes brighter, but come on Carlos, you are just a rookie in this area :) Very good presentation!

...around 450 mm.? I couldn't handle that if my butt were depending on it...
The noise doesn't bother me none. Awesome close-up! The expression in those eyes speaks volumes : priceless!
I'll open a can of Heineken right now..

I agree with Henk about the sharpness, although that really is a minor thing. what I really like here are the textures - the blue shawl is obviously soft, the necklace has that very nice matte shine of a well polished metal, but the hat is the best, love the subtle difference in the silky shine of the ribbon and soft velour of hat. nniccce :)

When I'm watching for some picture, I'm not worried about noise or horizon line. I'm looking for the main theme and, so, your main theme was well captured. You did a good work. It's beautiful and you captured the woman's expressions very well. Well done, regards, consuelo

Hello Kristaps,
A lovely portrait of this lovely and dapper looking lady. The Ecuadoreans are very colorful dressers and have a great sense of style. Better than the avante garde Parisean fashion shows and more elegant looking also. That was a tough task taking a photo at F/8 (with the teleconverter) at 450mm. It still has sufficient sharpness and this attractive lady should be on the cover of a fashion magazine (for real looking people). I love it!

Hello Kristaps,

A surpassing portrait, a testimony to the camera and to the photographer's skills. All things being equal, I would have cropped it to move her head to the right slightly, to get the centerline to pass through her right eye. In my book, "Math and the Mona Lisa," I discussed an intuitive principle used by the great painters, almost always putting one eye of the subject on the centerline — true of Leonardo's three portraits of women, true of almost all of Rembrandt's self-portraits, almost all of van Gogh's self-portraits, and even Picasso's portraits of his mistress Dora Maar. (If he had known that intuitive principle, he might have put her eye down in the lower corner.) The discovery was made by the British born psychologist, art lover Dr. Christopher Tyler, who practices in San Francisco. The story made the front page of the New York Times (and my book). When I organized a conference in Seoul in 2000, Dr. Tyler gave a most engaging talk.

Wonderful clear colors contrasting colors to this striking portrait. The expression is dreamy with excellent skin tones. the colorful traditional dress and muted background make for a first rate image.

What an outstanding portrait; detail and color are great... it's hard to believe you shot this from such a distance. I suspect without the distance you would have lost that air of regal command. I have no difficultly believing from her attitude that her status is high. I like the hat too.

Very nice portrait shot using 450mm and I would be happy with this pov and composition. The noise does not bother me.

The sharpness perhaps not on the hat of blue wrap, could be better on the face and eyes.

Still, I find this is superb portrait with such great expressive mood.

When we have to take a portrait exterior without extra light and with a 300mm lens this is absolutely not bad.
But you deed very nice, everyone try a better picture, but I find this splendid, very well done.
I'm not portrait specialist but I take portrait with a 65mm lens of Canon.

I like the hat, the light, the framing, the contrast between the green hat and the blue tunica, the facial expression, ....
Well, I think you got it! A wonderful portrait!Pefect balance of light conditions in her face despite the hat covering part of it. Perfect shutter openning to provide the blurred background, although that could also be due to the high zoom effect.

Hi, Kristaps. The lady looks quite elegant and self-confident and you've captured a good light in her face even though the brim of her hat is producing some shade. Maybe the sharpness is more on the hat than on her face, but it remains a very good portrait.

Wonderfull portrait. Perfectly composed. İt's a perfect tool you are using, but without a good eye and "photographers heart" even the best camera can not do too much. Here you have managed allmost all techniques and gimmicks of a good photography.

PS.I have read your comments to Peter's (pboehringer) entry of today. You are right my dear friend. My country's directon was been fixed towards west since Ataturk, when he built up a modern country in 1924. But since his death in 1938 we had allways to struggle against inner enemies, who since than allways tried to go back to the darkness of medieval ages.
Quite happy to see, that this problem is also been noticed and recognised by you my friend. Many thanks !
