| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Isla de la Plata is known as “the poor person’s Galapagos”. This deserted island is aswarm with nesting colonies of seabirds. The name “Isla de la Plata” (Silver Island), comes from the abundance of guano shining in the sun. Among the three species of boobies on the island, these masked boobies are the prettiest.
Boobies are very popular with visitors because of they are very approachable, making their nests in plain sight under the scorching sun. Males and females take turns shading and protecting the eggs with their own bodies. Once the babies are hatched it becomes a game of booby football. The fluffy hatchlings can devour enormous quantities of regurgitated fish, which their parents bring back from long flights out to sea. It’s an arduous task. A booby family can only raise one gluttonous chick at a time. To ensure its survival, the first hatched gets all the attention. Alas, the unhatched eggs get the boot right over the cliff. |

I like the diagonal division of the picture and the way the boobies look to opposite sides... Th ebaby-boobie is fluffy so is the blurred background... Has a symbolic meaning for me...
