| The Saturday market in Otavalo is the most famous market in Ecuador. The market takes over the entire town. There are actually about five different markets going on at the same time, each with its designated area, but the most colourful is the craft market. Some of the local cottage industries produce practical items like ropes and baskets, bt most of the finely crafted hand made goods are snapped up by tourists at ridiculously low prices. One of the most favourite artefacts is the hand-made, Otavalo rag doll, complete with local traditional dress, sombrero, and a baby or plate of corn in its hands. Irresistible. |
