[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This rather striking bird is the male Vermilion Flycatcher and it can mainly be found in the highland areas of the Galapagos Islands. I photographed this one in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island whilst looking for Giant Tortoises. Infact, this little bird was using the back of a Giant Tortoise as a look-out post for flying insects and I took several photos of him there.

After a few minutes he spied a moth fluttering by, took off into the sky and snapped it up in mid-air before returning to a nearby small tree to eat his catch.

I took 4 or 5 photos of him in the tree with the moth in his beak. If you look closely you can see little specks around the bird which are particles from the moth, caused by his thrashing about to get free.

The amazing thing about the Galapagos Islands is that you are spoilt for taking photos like this because the wildlife is so tame. Humans are considered no more a threat by this little bird than the Giant Tortoise he was stood on. It is such a privilege when you can get so close to these marvellous creatures that inhabit these unique Pacific islands.

I have added a second photo of this bird as a workshop image to show you what I mean about how unafraid he was of anyone wanting a photograph.
