A Blue-footed Booby perched on a small rock near the cliff top on Espanola Island in the Galapagos archipelago.
There are 3 types of Booby (we're just talking birds here, ok! ;) ) and they are the Blue-footed Booby, the Red-footed Booby and the Nazca Booby and they are all related to the Gannet family.
Despite being the least numerous of the 3 types of Booby, the Blue-footed Booby is the one you are most likely to come across in the Galapagos Islands. The Red-footed Booby is the most numerous with approximately 250,000 pairs but due to the fact that it nests in only a few remote locations, it is the species least seen by visitors.
All the Boobies are master divers and plunge-dive from great heights into shoals of fish like airborne torpedoes and the Blue-footed Booby is the greatest diver of them all diving from the greatest height and plunging to the greatest depth to grab a mouthful of fish. When it hits the water it is travelling at somewhere in the region of 80km/h which is quite phenomenal!
Oh, incidentally, the unflattering name 'Booby' apparently came about because early seafarers found them easy to kill at their nests which are built on the ground in seemingly random spots near cliff-tops.
This photo has had a small border added in Photoshop but is otherwise as taken. |

Hi Richard!

I was there few months ago and i was impressed of these blue-footed boobies! I'm about to send one of those soon!
It's sad that animals picture don't get anough appreciation... Maybe it is because of TrekNature!

Hi Richard,
Very nice POV and colours. According to my rather reduced british colloquialisms, you call "Boobies" to policemen as well?? Funny
