Photographer’s Note

of course, stratovolcano Cotopaxi (5897) (a photo by avene) is the major attraction in the Cotopaxi national park. however, there are several other quite photogenic volcanoes nearby and clearly visible (weather permitting) from the park.

volcano Sincholagua (~4700), slopes of which we can see fighting for due space in this photo, is one of them. unfortunately, the highest peaks of this mountain are supposedly almost impossible to climb due to rotten volcanic rocks. so... we didn't try (forgive us, fulvio!).

the photo was taken from the river-bed of rio pita (another photogenic local "model", but more about it later) in the territory of the cotopaxi park. that's where our quest for inca ruins (marked on the park map but yet to be found by us) ended that day. the cloud proudly posing in the photo soon made it clear it actually meant business and forced us to get the hell back to the hotel.

I took some time reading your intro and browsing through your fabulous gallery. You leads an interesting life.

Your compositions are all amazingly clear. The details are very well written in the picture. Well composed and you have managed the clarity and depth of field brilliantly. I like your patience and details in your work as most of the pictures posted here are flawless.

I'll gladly admit that I fell for the charms of Sincholague early on, I really liked the velvet-like slopes of the mountain looked soft as seal's fur, quite in contrast with the snow and hale and rocks of Cotopaxi. and I still want to explore Sincholague (and those damn ruins) more, preferably WITHOUT that cloud as a companion...
I like the point of view you've chosen here, not only it nicely implies that any conclusion is based on one - not neccessarily the only - perspective, but it also creates a great feeling of distance to the scene. beautiful colours, I find the pastel tones make the shot very elegant. excellent work.

Nice presentation of the features of this landscape. Great foreground of sharply focus boulders giving much depth & contrast to the other layers. Clean photo with much clarity & sharpness & nice dark clouds to top it off.

The outstanding POV is the key in this one.
And like Kristine already pointed out : those lovely pastel tones add a very elegant touch to the composition. Great definition & management of light. You sure done an excellent job, buddy.

Hello Kristaps,
This is tough, rugged country and you must be in good shape just to hike to this spot. I live at 5,280 feet above sea level and I frequently climb above 11,000 feet so I get winded just looking at your photograph. This is a superb scenic and what makes it an excellent rather than just a very good photo is the sunlight peaking through the clouds and shining on the distant volcanic mountain. I also like the way that the funnel spouting out of the brooding clouds is pointing right at the highlight on the mountain. Your composition is also excellent! You were also smart to take one lightweight and very vertasile lens with you. Great job!

Hi Kristaps,
Wonderfully stark landscape with somber colors and details everywhere. The mist covered mountaintop and the very greay sky looming above the giant volcanic rocks all work together in this fine image.

une vue dans laquelle le ciel me séduit. Il est gris , bien contrasté mais paradoxalement, ne parait pas trop menaçant.
L'exposition est très bien réglée.

A dramatic and powerful image. I like the way you put the big rocks of the FG "challenging" the volcano. The layered compo is very effective, specially because each one of them has its own "life" (or absence ot it, except for the FG).

Hi Kristaps.
I do really like the way you have composed this landscape picture. The result is extremely original and pleasant to admire, with the large room dedicated to the rocks in the foreground. The volcano lost in the fog is still extremely impressive.

A fascinating scene, though Kristine's image of Cotopaxi is visually more striking. It's all about learning more about the world & I came to know about the volcano Sincholagua, thanks to your post. The clouds especially that little tail which looks like the tail of a hurricane, almost from the tip of the crater, adds to the picture. Just wonder if it was possible to take a step or two alongside the boulders to take the shot! You would, of course know better & possibly even tell me ?! A fine image, maybe I'm nitpicking a bit too much.

Hi Kristaps,

I really like the three layers of this composition. They bring an interesting dof, not usual but attractive since it's a wide one. I also think that the low pov contributed for that. The grey sky was a great addition too. Beautiful capture!
