meet volcano Sincholagua (around 4700m), another marvel in the Cotopaxi National Park, as seen from the road up the slopes of the Cotopaxi volcano itself. unfortunately, the shy Sincholagua never entirely came out of the clouds, and we also did not have enough time to explore this mountain properly. next time.
a more distant view of Sincholagua - in this photo by zmey.

What to say, the play with light and shadow is wonderful. You pulled the sliders and then there was light..!!! ;-)
The patches of sunlight over the hills are beautiful, but it's that bright orange color on the slope of the volcano what brings this one out even more. It stands so good against that grey sky that it takes the whole picture up to a higher level.
Maybe some more sunlight on the diagonal field in front, but this is already very good.
Have a nice day, Henk

i like it. your favorite volcano in the cotopaxi park. :) "all smiles, all ears". i like the "enclosed space" feeling brought about by the clouds. and the sun-spots, of course. wonderful DOF and detail on the far volcanoe.
well done :)

This is a really great place, especially caused by these colours of the rocks. The clouds make the scenery even more impressive. My son ("AandK") has been there twice and I think he has lost his heart there ;-)
I also like the play of light and shadows in your picture - a great one!
Greetings from springlike Germany!

Another jewel from Ecuador...
Just like Henk, I particularly appreciate that wonderful shadowplay on those slopes.
And that orange up in there... damn! Just WONDERFUL!
This is a beauty, period.

Another wonderful landscape which looks more like an alien world than Earth. Those amazing clouds kept swirling and following you around and created the most interesting and dramatic lighting. This is simply a superb landscape of the incredible Ecuadorean scenery. Outstanding photo and a fabulous series!

Wonderfull landscape! Great lights and amazing colours of mountain... Is it a real volcano? And is it still alive? Great shot - congratulations:)

I do not know why are you complaining about clouds. :) They create marvelous atmosphere with semi lightened areas and shadow patterns. For me this is more interesting to see than the mere top of the vulcano. It is the landscape formed by it that it is so interesting and not seen everyday. Very dramatic atmophere and probably not so moody without clouds. :)

Hi Kristine, very nice photo. What it makes this picture very interesting is the different shadows in the mountains. It gives almost a 3 dimensional effect.
Good composition and POV.

An excellent making this volcano. Light, despite being distributed by various parts of the scene, was well treated.
Soft and delicate tones contrasting very well. It is a shame that the clouds do not have ceased to see the majesty of the crater. Well done, friend.

ooh! the light is so nice here! In the thumbnail, the pic seemed quite average, but now I'm stunned! Funny how good light can make up a shot. You did a nice job of making the colors pop out on the side of the volcano.
At the beginning, I was not sure why you included that foreground. but finally I like it. It adds depth to the compo and to the the light/color range.

Wonderful scene. The bright orange on the side of the volcano and the layer of clouds makes this scene looks magical.
well done Kristine

Hi Kristine, great weather situation. Love the play of light across the plain. The line of the diagonal foreground builds the composition. Nice details in the sky to enhance the mood. Well done.

Your series from Ecuador is compelling, and I look forward to seeing your newest post. This red material on the sides of the volcanic mountain must have flowed out from the volcano!?! Very good shot of this desolate, arid rugged region.

Bella imagen de este volcán entre luces y sombras y las vetas rojas que le dan un gran contraste. Excelente perspectiva.

I like very much this relief which is emphasized by the play of the shadows and the light created by clouds. What an even inhospitable and wild nature!
Very well done.

What a maginficent shot! I so love the light in photography and this is just splendid! I love those patches of light and shadow. Wonderful wide view, awesome sky... What a beautiful job of capturing such a scene! Many thanks and warmest regards,

I'm not sure I've ever seen such clear and distinct cloud shadows; I think it must be the high altitide but the shadows coupled with the cloud ceiling really gives the sense of playing the clouds.
gunbud (34066) 2008-04-05 20:27
Very moody somber image which must be common with the ever chaging weather at this high altitude. Wonderful light filtering through the storm clouds that brings soothing shadows and finely seen details.

Hello, Kristine -
This reminds me of my own similar frustrations with Cotopaxi, and to add insult to injury, the mountain came out of the clouds just as we returned to Quito, too far away to capture it. So I can appreciate that you've done a great job with the circumstances you were given. The interplay of light and shadow on the mountainside makes a dramatic show, and the clouds are textured enough to keep them from being boring.
cepekdong (3676) 2008-05-27 12:52
a really nice nature picture. i like the diffuse light which seems to be so different in parts of the picture

I always enjoy the play of light & shadow, especially more in landscape. Here the main attraction in a volcano, which makes it all the more 'gripping'. You were lucky to have the sunlight hit the orangish parts of the slope, making them glow. As the cone is capped by the grey clouds, the light filtering through the clouds make it more attractive. Did you take this picture from the car? Amazing shot!
