The city of Cartagena, Colombia was often a target of pirates and other raiders in its colonial times. It was the main city for shipping gold and other mineral valuables to the mother country, Spain, so there was usually much wealth there. The Spanish built the huge fortress, Barajas, to help protect the city from raiders.
