Photographer’s Note

Colombia, land of flowers.

With regard to the approach of the day of San Valentin, I want to dedicate this space to know one the most important aspects within our national economy: the export of Colombian flowers.

Colombia, second world-wide producer of flowers after Holland, is the first supplier to the United States with a quota of 65% of the market. For this 2,007 it is hoped to send a million boxes, by which it is hoped to receive more from U.S. $ 100 million.

Pompones, astromelias and red roses are the varieties of greater demand from the Americans to give in this celebration, that began to celebrate in 1.969, when the catholic calendar dedicated the 14 of February to remember San Valentin, beheaded marrying even without authorization.

The floricultor sector of our Andean nation, generates around 160,000 direct and indirect uses between, of which a 65% correspond to women, who are chosen by their innate conditions of smoothness and gentleness.

She is in honor to the women workers of the cultures, that many producers name the varieties of the flowers that harvest and export.

Most of the production of Colombian flowers is destined to the market of the United States, and around a 11% it is going to stop to the supermarkets and floristerías of Europe, specially to Germany.

At the moment the country has seeding 6,000 hectares of flowers, specially in the Savannah of Bogota and Rionegro, in the nor-West of the Department of Antioquia.

A special greeting to all the enamored ones.
