Histories are many that tile in winch of the origin and to the construction of the chapel and its tower. But the truth is that it was constructed towards the year of 1764, by initiative of Fray Fernando de Jesus Larrea, born in Quito.

Larrea father came to Cali to found a convent for the franciscana order. He counted on the support of the priest Nicholas Hinestroza, one of the richest men of the region, who collaborated to him yielding the land, facilitating to him money, materials and tools, and donating several slaves for the construction of the work.

The enthusiasm of the founder soon was blocked by the bishop of Popayán (pertaining to another religious order), that in the long run Hinestroza father obtained that retired his support, but not that Larrea father culminated his persistence.

The style to mudéjar of the work is explained by the presence, like head of the slaves, of Pedro Umbas, a slave I free of origin Moor. Umbas had been born in Seville (Spain), one of the cities where the Arabs made some of his more extraordinary architectonic works.

Hi John,

Very interesting thid church. At first I tought it was a mosque and that was with cought my atention, once I don"t think there is many arabs in Colombia... Nice POV you got, framing is also good once it enhance the doors features, the inclusion of the tree branches on the composition works well offering a color contrast to the church red bricks.

Regards,

Flavia

Hola John !

Pablo
