| This picture was taken during the First Ibero-american Special Olympics Fides-Compensar. I like to think of the swimmer's face hidden behind/beneath the water as a metaphor for the way society shuns people with mental disabilities. The splashing represents the struggles and obstacles they must face throughout their lives. Were it not for non-profit organizations like FIDES that dedicate themselves to the care and development of mentally retarded individuals, we would never see these people as who they really are: champions of life. |
