Something much more simple today....
Easter Island is obviously known for its culture, and more specifically its Moai Statues that are scattered throughout the Island.
And yes, those statues are a huge reason why people come to this remote destination, but the real honest beauty of the Island is seen everywhere.
I wanted to post a photo or two of just that, showing the other sides of Easter Island.
We woke up out of bed super early to catch the sunrise, and as we're driving one of the main roads to the coastline this was what we saw.
Dogs are a common sight on Easter Island, they roam by themselves like any other animal and they are so friendly. Amazingly as I pulled the jeep over to get this photo, 3 dogs suddenly appeared out of the bushes!
I'll post a WS photo of one of them. They wanted so badly to get into the jeep with us :)
Hope you like it

a "close encounters of the third kind" feel about this image. It is just the sort of deserted road that smacks of alien abductions. OK yes my imagination is running riot again. It is the simplicity of this shot that makes it so irresistibly beautiful. I would never have guessed the location, but it is a superb insight into this amazing little island.
Regards - Brian.
the dogs would have freaked me out though. Bad experience in Portugal where a dog took a liking to me and decided to take me by the wrist home with him. B.

An attractive well presented composition that benefits very much from the lovely ambient light. The road is nicely placed off-centre and leads directly toward that delightful puffy cloud hovering over the hummock. Excellent clarity.

This endless road is very impressive, great perspective, beautiful landscape with gentle hills, well done

My immediate thought on seeing this was the intro sequence for Gerry Bruckheimer movies, where the camera steams up the road, and stops just as the lightning hits the tree. This looks just like that scene!
As you say, raw beauty like this is hard to replicate, and there is something so honest and raw about the perfection of the landscape here. It looks stunning, and a great idea to show the beauty away from the giant heads.
Out of interest, are the dogs wild? The one in the workshop looks as mellow as a family pet, and in really good health. Beautiful animal, the workshop is a great compliment to this main post as I now picture many of our hairy friends peering out of the bushes!
All the best

This looks a bit flatter than I imagined. "One of the main roads" also surprises me a bit. I hadn't expected more than one or two tracks worth that name. Then of course, if they want tourists they have to make life comfortable for them. Having nice and friendly dogs running around in the wilderness is another strange thing. Stray dogs should normally be avoided - or they avoid you. Obviously there are lots of things I didn't know about Easter Island. Two nice pictures in any case.

you don´t even know how much I like such scenes.
Deserted road and not a living soul in the surrounding(ok.exept the dogs:)
I like also the light and color scheme of the scene(really superb contrast between them!)
Btw.prepare for the same scenes in Greece. Also many stray dogs.
Have a good day

I didn't expect landscape like this as the region where the statues are looks fairly hilly. These green meadows look very good too. Open road disappearing to horizon is always a good theme, enhancing sense of perspective. (Did you add some vignetting?)

There is something very romantic about a long empty road going past empty rural landscape.
Here, the sharp colours are very attractive. The dark pitch of the asphalt contrasts with the green-yellow vegetation of either side, with an occasional tree make for a scenery that gets my adrenalin pumping.
The small hillock in the horizon with the light blue sky in the background looks beautiful. The upper half of the photograph is the wide sky with the occasional white cloud - like the tree...
Pushing me - my wanderlust .. a very primeval feeling !!
Thanks for sharing, Craig.

Very interesting pictures from a place I will never see in reality. But it is always fine to use TE to see all these peculiar places.

Hi craig, beautiful view of the road on the Easter island. I do not remember the dogs on Easter Island but there were many wild horses. But friendly dogs, belonging to no one, very quite, were indeed typical for all Chile. Like cats in Istanbul. Beautiful light, before sunrise? So nice to see Tosca with a dog!
Warm regrads Malgo

Certainly an unusual shot from Easter Island but one that uses good leads, shows regard to composition and has a hill to create a focal point. I love the details of the wild flowers edging to road.
I was intrigued by your notes about the dogs. Are these dogs wild or just running free from their homes? They do seem particularly friendly and eager for company which suggests they are not pack dogs!
My warm regards,

Superb perspective that gives the road in this picture, this drives our view that is lost on the horizon, a fairly flat terrain but very green, these trees are a nice touch in the picture.
A beautiful day, it gives you some wonderful colors.
Great brightness and superb sharpness, to enjoy the details.
Have a good day.

Lovely shot with the road giving great depth to the scene with the little hill on the horizon. Love the low lying cloud and the blue sky and the perfectly positioned tree breaking up the horizon line. Nice atmosphere about this shot Craig.

I picked this photo out of the series of three because I like the story about the dogs. :-) I also like the landscape, although it seems so empty. That lone tree and hill in the distance break up the flatness. Nice depth in this one. I wonder...do most natives of Easter Island stay there their entire lives, or do they leave to find more opportunities somewhere else? Is the standard of living very high? It seems like such an interesting place...

I love this shot! Reminds of the song The Highways of my Life by the Isley Brothers. This one has a lovely feel for me...minus the stray dogs of course, in which I may have screamed and driven out of wits with the idea that I am "their breakfast".Like it!:-)
