'Gothic cathedrals dropped from a considerable height'

A detail of the Grey Glacier in the Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia.

I love the beautiful blue colours, the gothic shapes and the detailed banding in the ice in this shot.

The photo was taken handheld from the boat that brought us out on the lake (Lago grey). The black background is a cliff made up of a very dark rock. In the top right is a black dot in one of the ice spires where it forms an arch and you can see the rock behind through it.

The shapes of these ice columns reminded me of a quote from the highly recommended book by the late Douglas Adams and zoologist Mark Carwardine called 'Last Chance to See ...' in which Dounglas described his feelings as he was looking at a glacier.

Hi Hauke,

it really looks like gothic architecture.
I love these tones, so cold and shining and the contrast with the background

Hi Hauke, indeed very impressive. I couldn't understand why the bg was black till i read your note. The blueish colors are beautiful and the details/sharpnes perfect.
