On the ferry crossing Magellan's strait waters toward the famous Tierra del Fuego, "The Land of Fire". On the deck bellow, the crew packed the vehicles tightly together (few inches of space on both sides) that creaked while the vessel maneuvered and broke the little waves. On top of the open and wind stricken deck, the sun blazed and ricocheted off the roof of our bus under deep blue skies and decent quite waters. Here and there a seal played near the stable vessel. Ten minutes and I was cold enough to go down to shelter where most of the vehicle's passengers took shelter.

In the year of 1520, three Portuguese vessels, lead by captain Ferdinand Magellan, entered the mouth of the famous strait with the intention of reaching the East Indies via a west course (unlike the east course via the dangerous Cape Horn passage). Through this channel The importance of this channel declined with the opening of the Panama channel in 1914. Today, outside hordes of tourists that cross the strait, many busses shuttle people from the Magellan's to the Chilean side of the Island, and also to the southernmost city, Ushuaia.
