Photographer’s Note

Santa Laura is former saltpetre refinery located some 50 km east of Iquique. In 1872, the Guillermo Wendell Nitrate Extraction Company founded the saltpetre works of Santa Laura, while the region was still a part of Peru. Works were abandoned around 1960 and some ten years later, after becoming ghost town, it was declared national monument and opened to tourism. In 2005, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
