I've said it before, that Easter Island is easily my most favorite travel destination - if I had the time and money I'd go back again in a heartbeat.
Here we were on the last evening of our stay on this amazing little Island. I wanted to make sure we had some sunset photos to take back home with us.
And this collection of Moai ruins right along the islands edge seemed perfect.
You just can't go wrong visiting Easter Island!
Thanks for looking

these Moai statues makes a perfect scenery for so beautiful sunset shot! It´s also a lovely last scene to keep in memory from this unique island.
The sunset colors are fabulous, but for me also these amazing cloud formations play an important role in building so unique mood of the scene.

Hi Craig. Dreams for you and a cataclysmic nightmare for the original inhabitants who basically destroyed their environment in their craze to erect even bigger Moai.Quite a haunting mood considering their fate. Regards. Klaudio.

This is just the sort of shot that I love!
It is full of mood, a wonderful location and steeped in history!
The silhouetted figures make an irresistible focal point, highlighted against the bright sky, and strongly placed. They stand proud, watching the horizon, immovable, resolute, stirring dreams and imagination in the viewers!
Have a great week,

An excellent idea to shoot those mythical statues against the sunset
Excellent light management and very poetical image

A finely produced image with a palpable atmosphere, no wonder you like the place so much. Expertly composed and exposed with superb colours and sharpness. I would dearly love to go there but it is a hell of a long way from this part of the world.

This is a place I really want to go soon! This view is classic, with the silhouettes of the moais and the sunset, perfectly captured with excellent colors! Wonderful composition! I hope the ticket promotions of LAN are back for the next year, so that I can go to this paradise!

Ciao e buona giornata

A dramatic and special sunset Craig with the silhouetted figures looking powerful in their silent presence. I can only imagine the feeling actually seeing this in the flesh would evoke, there is a primitive and otherworldly atmosphere to this shot almost as if the spiritual reality will remain come what may. Excellent. Warm regards rosemary

lovely shot and an evocative one considering it was your last night on this special little island. Just enough detail to make it recognisable and quite special just seeing the silhouetted and iconic statues.
It makes you wonder how many human eyes have witnessed this setting in the past................thought provoking stuff.

From your notes on Easter Island it certainly comes across that you have a passion about this place. This photo reminds me of a pilgrimage you have made to say goodbye. Excellent sunset with the silhouette of the Moai figures. A lasting memory of your visit.
Noel_Byrne (26117) 2013-09-25 6:52
your composition reminds me of some celestial chess game and I can see a large hand descend from the sky to move a piece. This does seem such a beautiful place and the scenes youhave posted each have their own unique and special magic and charm. This truly is a magical place and combined with that sky, wow!
all the best

The silhouettes of the Moai on top of the hill, the dark foreground and the infinite view over the ocean contribute here to the air of mystery with which these statues are connected.
Wonderful colours of the sky under and between the dark clouds.
Best regards, Paul

Quite an imaginative shot of the Maoi Ruins in lowlights.Very well captured with clouds coming prominently in the background.TFS.

This moment of your visit was the evening a little to dark, for an clarity picture.
But now we get a contrast picture with the silhouettes of the statues.
Excellent composition, lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
adramad (39496) 2013-09-26 7:22
A dreamy image, which is produced by the conjugation of the beautiful sky with silver sea level and those Moai on the island, which appear as vigilantes who have been watching the centuries pass, it would be to dream that I could visit this place some day ....
Good brightness and sharpness, with vibrant colors.
Very well done.
Have a nice day.

The giant heads are back! :-) Great silhouette view; they look like a family, just hanging out together. Beautiful sky and dark foreground, too. I can understand how you'd want to take tons of photos of these statues. Every view is unique and amazing.

And this one is also known view for me. The best place for sunset photo on Easter Island. For me it was also a dream destination. I wouldn't believe in my youth that it would be ever possible to go there.
Splendid sky and these black silhouettes against it.
I am back home, preparing for Istanbul (I try to learn a bit of Turkish but it is difficult).
Hugs for you and Tosca

Easter Island is also on my bucket list if I ever make it to South America. Superb silhouettes of the enigmatic statues and a pleasant sunset backdrop. Good sharpness and graphism with stark lighting contrasts. Well composed with the horizon line well away from the centre. Tfs!
SWEETFREEDOM (23084) 2013-09-29 4:59
great picture, the statues'dark silouhettes and the sunset sky is wonderful.
tatadalou (6749) 2013-09-29 8:17
You had the chance to benefit a great sky for your last evening ! The clouds add more mystery, with the silhouette of the five moais which stand.
holmertz (43291) 2013-09-30 8:27
I just got back from Greece and have sort of lost contact with TE but I hope to start uploading new pictures any day now.
You surely captured a fine atmosphere with the moai standing in front of the setting sun and with those fine clouds above. It's an awe-inspiring sight and I understand your enthusiasm. Realistically i will never see this myself. It's cheaper and less of a hassle to watch your pictures anyway.
All the best,
CLODO (31186) 2013-10-05 0:21
Not very active on TE these days, I am not at home, so I missed this one.
Very simple but so eye catching, with a splendid spotted dawn sky enhancing the black silhouettes of the great stone figures, against the backlighted sea.
Have a nice WE

It's so good to hear how much you loved Easter Island. You're like my mum, who has always dreamt of going there, but sadly will never see it. Although there isn't a documentary about it that she hasn't seen and there's nothing she doesn't know about the place. I really like this POV, at a distance, taken in this light. The silhouettes are quite haunting and I like how they've been positioned slightly off-centre to the right of the frame. The sky is beautifully balanced and the silky sea is the icing on the cake. Nice work, an enchanting photo.
Happy Sunday (it's the Long Weekend here yay!)

What a magical place this must be, so glad you were able to experience it during your lifetime...because the pictures you've shared with us would certainly prove to be a location high on anyone's wish list!
Even from a distance, the silhouettes of these Moai are striking...especially set against that richly colorful sunset. The simple nature of this shot conveys such a warm and peaceful vibe...a classic example of letting the moment take over and absorbing the atmosphere.
Too bad you couldn't have brought one of them back as a souvenir, I'm sure it'd look great in any living room! :) Smart cut, the panoramic layout suits this extremely well. I can only assume you still have many more pictures from here, can't wait to see 'em!
Enjoy the rest of the day. Take care.
Cheers from down South,

I love the series of photos you've posted from Easter Islands. This is one of the earliest, and again set against a rising sun. Your comment, "...is easily my most favorite travel destination," resonates loudly. I look forward to corresponding separately about your experience in this part of the world. One compositional suggestion, whenever you present profiles, whether of living people or Moai, I would recommend having them facing inward toward the center of the frame. In short, putting the statues on the left third of the frame. Although principles are made to be violated, in paintings or in photos, it is better not to have the subject face outward from the frame.
