I have so many photos of these Moai on Easter Island, there are still a few that I wish to share.
Vertical compositions are my favorite, but for some reason i don't take very many of them. Here it seemed to work out well with this solitary Moai standing tall and stern.
You can see in the background the vast landscape of Easter Island. Even though the Island is tiny, when you're out exploring like this it has an extraordinary large feel to it.
Amazing place to visit!

I like the point of view here and the use of the vertical format which gives full rein to that lovely sky. The lighting is quite delicious and the colours soft and natural. The image has immense depth.

just one Moai statue, but excellently close-up and framed in vertical format.I think that´s why the scene looks so expressive!
I don´t know how you,but every time when I see these Statues I can feel some kind of mystery. And the mood you were able to capture here perfectly(mainly because of the unique light, which helps you to achieve this effect).

Beautiful point of view in the background of sky. The dept of field is good. I like your composition.
Thank you very much for sharing.

if you are like me, I take so many shots when in the zone and then cannot decide which ones I like the most. I have been waiting for some more like this, a superb POV and real sense of the presence and size of these magnificent Moai. Glorious textures and a great idea of the setting and atmosphere. Wonderful!
Enjoy your Sunday - Brian.

A great portrait of this statue, as you say he does look very stern and somber, but then again so would I if I had spent thousands of years under varying weather the way he has! The clouds have once again helped to create a very moody shot, I think they add a lot to it. The landscape spreading out beyond does give a wide and quite desolate feel. Great shot of this icon of the ancient world.

Strange to see single Moai. Even he looks surprise! Vertical format fits perfectly with your guy. Like your POV!
have great Sunday

Hello Craig,I really like the upright format, the wide angle lens has allowed the interesting sky to play it`s part giving a lovely feeling of space around the solitary Moai.
A cracking shot.
All the best Les.

Nice POV that lets the statue dominate with the gaze! Like a security guard for the landscape beyond! his lightly threatening mood added to by the darker sky.
holmertz (53502) 2013-06-30 8:45
This is a very straightforward, centred photo, but it captures the magic of the statue very well. I guess it's a combination of low POV (you probably had no other choice), discreet light and the vastness of the scenery behind it.
Some 5-6 years ago I was very tempted to go to Easter Island, but reading more about it got the impression that it's not just rather expensive but above all extremely touristic, and that the only chance of getting some decent pictures of the moai, without herds of other tourists spoiling the view and atmoshpere, is to get up before dawn (which this picture indicates), and have your own means of transport. Would you agree?

Another fine photosraph from your stay on Easter Island.
Your vertical "portrait" format has worked very well here and your use of a very wide lens has certainly emphasised the vastness of the landscape behind this solitary guardian. Funnily enough, this Moai (is that right - is "Moai" singular or plural or both?) seems to have different proportions from others - I had always thought that the heads were almost as big as their "bodies" but this fella appears to have a smaller head than most.
Again, your control of the light (whether that was at the time of shooting or with subsequent HDR) is superb and we see him portrayed perfectly against the sky and the almost featureless landscape behind him.

Great shot of the Moai on Easter island. It really amazes me how these monuments can last for so long exposed to the elements without any maintenance. The low POV and the portrait format allows plenty of the sky to be shown above the figure which gives a very atmospheric feel to the scene. Nice composition.
All the best.

I'm glad the first line of your note mentioned having more of these to share, I was hoping that would be the case! I really like how you narrowed this one down to its simple essence, placing it center point and at the bottom of the frame. Usually a greater amount of sky leaves negative space, but with this vertical composition and placement I think it works to your advantage. The Moai looks very stout, but almost leaning back casually as if to say "Any time you're ready!" :) Blissful colors and textures once again, these have been some great shots and a wonderful way to show off the islands treasures. Have a great week ahead.
Cheers from Az.,

Il n'a pas l'air commode ton "garde"!Bon cadrage de ce Moai qui semble tout seul pour protéger cette vaste étendue.

beautiful view of this lonely moai, it seems that he looks at the world around. Wonderful landscape, so quiet and mysterious atmosphere. The vertical format works here very well. Amazing place!

hi Craig, an interesting piece of stone... Excellent imagination. Nicely presented with a nice sky at background, you managed well the light difference between FG & BG. Tfs.

This type statue is my unknown, but this also an Easter Island, this is for me to far.
Nice placed in centre of the picture with a big background.
You chose a very well angle this cares for nice depth and perspective.
Excellent quality, lovely presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.

together with stonehenge, moai guys are amongst the most speculative pieces of historical huge rocks, raising the big, red question marks of who, how and why in your vancouver hdr.
i am always curious. is there a museum on the island, having some remains from the locals who erected the moai? did they live in the caves or did they build villages? who were they and why did they build these? what kind of gods would be so terrible to make those people that intimidated to create such huge worship material?
well, this sullen face has a hidden history in behind. i wish i had a time machine to see the making of them...

Une vignette qui ma donner envie d'ouvrir, de lire la note, une drôle de sculpture ( pas très amicale :-)) dans ce paysage immense, en tout les cas une composition intéressante et bien présenter

Hey great sky here, betcha never heard that before ;)
This old guy looks like he can control the sky, the clouds and the sea. He really looks like a pensive old man who knows everything, but is telling nobody. (In fact he reminds me of the little old Italian guys my dad has coffee with every morning). Beautiful colours and textures - HDR? - and excellent vertical frame.
Thanks for sharing, I hope you've recovered from your big day

I like this single Moai, it's a nice subject.
I agree to you: the vast landscape in the background is an extra interest to the picture when discovering it more deeply. Thanks for sharing!
