Where do I begin?
Of all the cities and sites we visited on our recent trip to Peru and Chile, Easter Island was by far the highlight in my books!
I remember studying about Easter Island and its history when I was in grade school. Falling in love with this remote Island was easy, and it has been a boyhood dream of mine to one day visit.
That dream finally became reality, and all I can say to everyone out there is if an opportunity comes up where you can travel here...Make it Happen!
For this photo, we got up early to catch the sunrise over the hill in the bg...it didn't really work out that way on this particular morning, but it didn't stop me from shooting some photo's. The grey skyline worked out well in the end adding a sweet atmosphere.
These Moai are so photogenic, I can only hope that my posted photos of them here on TE will be unique - but i know in my heart they've all been photographed in every possible scenario.
However, that won't stop me from loving my time here, loving the landscape, and loving the history of Easter Island.
I'll post a few of these Moai but not too many :)

I also dreamt about visiting Easter Island for forty years. In my school days I would not expect it could ever come true. but it happened. When I saw the possibility to go there I decided in five minutes. I saw an offer and asked LF - would you like to got to Easter Island? Is it possible?? Yes, I said. And I bought the tickets immediately. beautiful shot, this big moai and in the distance the row of fifteen. Sunrise there is a magical view. Fantastic.
One of my first photos here on TE. A long long way since that time :).
Royaldevon (41062) 2013-06-01 23:42
You are my neighbour, today.
I, like you, have had a fascination with Easter Island since first hearing about it! There have been some amazing documentaries about what happened to the inhabitants who created these awesome statues. Who will ever really know!!
A really well composed shot, the enigmatic statue well positioned on one diagonal, with his gaze following the opposing diagonal. The clouds have an amazing halo effect.
How great that you have no-one else in shot, which adds to the sense of isolation and mystery.
Have a great Sunday,
Thanks for your warm critique.

Glad you were able to fulfill one of your dream destinations. I have to admit I'm envious...not only of this place, but that I've yet to reach mine! I don't think you need to be concerned with being unique...I don't recall seeing any photos of this locale here on TE since I've been around, and your eye for composition and precision makes all the difference in presentation. What a great way to start any day, this view is gorgeous! The soft morning light shaded by the clouds sets a wonderful tone for this shot. I have a feeling I'm going to run out of adjectives with what you have to show from this experience. :) Awesome!
Have a nice Sunday,

A fine composition featuring this giant statue. I like that stormy looking sky, it accentuates the atmosphere no end and suits the subject perfectly.

Hi Craig, fantastic pic from your fantastic last trip,i wish to be there me too,the atmosphere is really magic under this cloudy sky, great perspective, details and colors despite the difficult light, waiting new pics i wish you all the best,Luciano

Hi Mr Macintosh
so jealous of this shot! It is an amazing looking place and early morning it must be so atmospheric and a "pinch yourself" moment too. This gives us such a great idea of its size and scale as well as the panorama of the island. My camera would go into red hot mode here - stunning and fascinating imagery!
Enjoy a peaceful Sunday - Brian.

Such a mysterious place, Easter Island has got to be one of the most enduring of all the places in the world that makes us stop for a moment and think. You have captured a very unique image of it here. I have seen many shots taken here, but most focus only on the great heads (usually looking up to make them even more impressive), but you have included here a beautiful capture of the landscape that puts them into a beautiful context. The sky is a perfect backdrop.
Really excellent shot, thanks for sharing.
Miguel82 (27648) 2013-06-02 4:25
Remarkable composition Craig, amazing sky
a strange monolith in the middle of nowhere
Good exposition, fine colors and sharpness
Enjoy your sunday
marabu61 (11189) 2013-06-02 5:22
Oh, don't be afraid of posting more of these beauties. As you say, the Easter islands evoke a sense of adventure and spirituality that nobody can resist.
This is an impressing take on one of the iconic statues there. I even think the dramatic sky has added a lot to the success of this compassion. It is good to see the statue in its context with the landscape as well. Colors, light and framing all is just perfect.
have a good sunday
krzychu30 (15512) 2013-06-02 5:58
I can easily understand your fascination about this place. The long and rich history of Easter Island and mystery concerning the origin of the statues make the island perfect place to discover.
The composition is magnificent. This intriguing statue, wide open spaces behind and a partial view of the Ocean-really superb!
But for me also the morning light and colors are excellent.I like especially so nice and strong contrast between the gren grass and cloudy, grey sky.
I´m looking forward for more!
Have a nice sunday

Hi Craig, lovely view of this beautiful and interesting place. Very well composed and captured in this beautiful photograph. A lovely image with good sharpness, depth, nice light and color. An excellent and beautiful job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.
Good morning and happy start to the week.
Best wishes from southern Spain.

Maybe this place really have been photographed a lot but your shot is truly awesome! Like this magical atmosphere created by the special lighting and natural tones of the moment. It looks like all were waiting to be photographed by YOU to show us this stunning scene. Very well done. Excellent work!
worldcitizen (9006) 2013-06-02 13:03
This Moai seems to be welcoming you. :-) I like the moody sky and atmosphere. I seriously doubt that I will ever set foot on Easter Island, so I am going to enjoy the view via your excellent photos. :-)
npecanhuk (75770) 2013-06-02 18:34
I've been seeing your pictures and Tosca's on facebook... wonderful places and photographs! That's a place I must put on my list of the ones I must go to some day in my life!
I love the picture too! Sharpness, exposure, colors, horizontal format, slim black borders, contrasts, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
The island seems to be bigger than I thought they'd be!
TFS - congrats,
jjcordier (79297) 2013-06-02 22:32
La statue en elle même est très impressionnante et fait fonctionner notre imaginaire mais, en plus, tu as rajouté cette atmosphère matinale particulière qui lui convient à merveille, donnant une bonne harmonie de tons à l'ensemble de l'image.
ChrisJ (116676) 2013-06-03 1:49
There are so few shots of Easter Island and even fewer wide angled shots that show the context of the surroundings such as this. Good sharpness and shadow detail despite the diffused light and overcast skies. The distant group of stone statues adds a secondary focal point. Tfs!
dkmurphys (62129) 2013-06-03 4:10
I'm glad you were so excited about that place. I guess everywhere is something great and everyone has a piece of the world that makes it right for him. Lovely image, quite an impressive atmosphere.
Have a good week.
rogerl (1620) 2013-06-03 5:00
Craig, we strongly considered going to Easter Island and Peru this winter before getting an offer to go to Italy with friends instead. I imagined it would be pretty fantastic. Even though the clouds are gray, they are pretty interesting; the Moai is odd sitting out in the middle of a plain like that. Somehow I imagined lots of them together in a row. Nicely shot with great depth in the photo. Thanks.
m (0) 2013-06-03 8:36
not the most stunning light ever, but the picture's so attractive in these subdued colors. They reflect the wild nature of the place perfectly.
Glad your childhood dream came true and you can feel so happy about it now. Hope there are many more to come.
mkamionka (39201) 2013-06-03 8:59
you are slowly one of these people who are covering the whole map of the world. I am so jealous.
I have seen your series from this place on FB. It is amazing. Personally I was never attracted to this place, it seemed to me like extremely remote with just some carved stones to see there, but I can see now after you put it in an interesting perspective that there is a unique charm and atmosphere over there.
Very well thought through composition with fantastic foreground, great weather but also the line of the guys further in the distance being very interesting.
BennyV (19057) 2013-06-03 9:54
All-time favourite destination...that's quite a big claim. And even bigger would be to bring this across photographically! Great picture, though. No doubts about that. Superb sky and atmosphere. Good use of the wide angle too.
(And, yes, for me the picture sure is original enough. Or maybe I just haven't seen enough Easter Island pictures?)
ACL1978 (7511) 2013-06-03 17:53
And now I'm jealous again! This is exactly what I envisioned we'd see from you on Easter Island, and it doesn't disappoint. A nice close view of one Moai with so many others in a row behind - a really nice landscape shot as well here. I'm always fascinated by how desolate Easter Island looks in photos - volcanic and deserted. Did it feel at all spooky being there, or is it so busy with tourists that you don't really notice?
ktanska (28415) 2013-06-04 11:58
You've captured mysteriousness of this statue well. Wide angle showing more in the background and steeper background look great. This has same far away feeling as some of your Iceland pictures. You have certainly covered some mileage this year. I wonder which country gets color next on your TE map.
delpeoples (59186) 2013-06-05 3:33
Ahhh post as many of em as you like, I'll enjoy every one of them. They're magnificent and leave me speechless. You have shot them with such originality and quality. I can see that the clouds also wanted you to produce a stunner, as they've made a wonderful contribution to the photo. Sensational tones, you did remarkably well in this difficult light.
Thanks for sharing, and lucky you - what an experience
jmdias (66403) 2013-06-05 6:55
chile and peru are some of the places I liked more to know and in therms of urban buildings peru is just amazing, and I am not talking about machu picchu.anyway each region move a feeling inside us according with each personal history and the present moment while visiting the places..
few days ago I was searching a way to reach Australia using this island like a stop, but I guess it is very difficult and expensive. anyway I want to know this place some day.
nice details of the sculpture and the landscape ahead, the weather wasn't good but you did a nice job under these conditions. TFS.
fabbs99 (17175) 2013-06-05 23:44
It is a classic shot given the overcast conditions. The ancient statue standing guard to the fields around has been captured very well. Superb pov and exposure. Thanks for sharing this good work.
tyro (26138) 2013-06-06 11:42
I can quite understand how Easter Island could well be your most favourite of all favourite places to visit. I can imagine there must be a certain "magic" here.
And this picture depicts that mood perfectly. The early morning light in the sky makes a fabulous backdrop to this solitary Moai in the foreground, though we can see a group of them in the distance too. You have also perfectly captured that inscrutable, though also rather sad, expression on the Moai's face.
The light is delicious, the colours look very true, your exposure is perfect and the details and sharpness are exquisite.
adores (46079) 2013-06-06 16:09
Go ahead! They're just amazing. Hope to go there one day also!
This one is really good. The cloudy sky gives it a very special atmosphere and you framed them very well, with this lonely one in foreground and the other distant group. I like the post processing!
ourania (48838) 2013-06-08 13:20
this is a captivating picture with awesome depth and atmosphere. The site and the sculptures are always fascinating in photos and stories and for many of us a visit there will remain a dream for a long time. I had never seen a picture of this site with such an extraordinary, wintry and dramatic atmosphere. The subdued colours are alluring and the sense of a strong wind blowing over the flat landscape is so vivid. The textures are very rich in interest and the distances between focal points have been rendered superbly. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
kato (11630) 2013-06-08 19:10
You're capturing well this landscape by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the place isolated from contemporary civilization and the ancient ruins with stone statue. You show well the feature of this place by a land, the sea and gray sky. When getting to know native civilization("the Moai"), it seems to a precious photograph.
sevy (58) 2013-06-12 1:40
Yes, the dream of many traveller is to go and visit this island. At least it is one of my dream.
I like the mood of this shot with grey sky and unsaturated colors on the grass.
maloutim (9639) 2013-06-13 0:22
I can understand your passion for the island, as most of us who haven't been there dream of visiting this mythical place.
What saddens me most when I read about it is the complete deforestation it has suffered. How terrible to think that these vasts bare stretches were once covered in forests.
Still, I suppose that the character will be different when or if they start replanting, and reintroducing birds...
I like your picture with the dramatic sky over this lone Moai against the bare expanses at the back, with the line of statues in the distance.
Very effective composition.
ikeharel (74825) 2013-07-15 7:13
Once red an article in the National-Geographic magazine, a whole story about this island - and no wonder that you titled this pic. "My All Time Favorite Destination". It sure to intrigue everyone whose interested in history, nature and antropology.
Our world would be a boring place without...
Fabulous scenery from the point taken, the clouds added mystery to the island known heritage.
KristinsCamera (2384) 2013-07-31 18:51
your enthusiasm really comes through in your note, craig ~
and i can see why with this atmospheric shot.
the colors of the sky and the ground are a suitably textured and moody backdrop for this fellow.
thank goodness these weird and amazing creations are still with us and that time or people have not destroyed them.
fritzi007 (11573) 2015-01-20 12:36
congratulate you on this journey, and I have read a book on Easter Island and seen the movie. Other people say it was very boring, I do think not, your photo and information is great!
Thank you and have a nice day
