Photographer’s Note

The eight of December are celebrated in Chile, as well as in the rest of the catholic world, the day of the Immaculate Conception; that day peregrinations to the virgin are made who is in the hill San Cristobal.

Santiago has several hills within its urban radius and San Cristóbal is one of highest, comprises of spurs of the Mountain range of the Andes that extends on the city. He has about 860 meters on the level of the sea and 320 meters on the plane of the city.

The Virgin Maria, with her 14 meters of height (without pedestal) and 36 tons of weight, keeps the city from this hill, leaves from the recreational area of the Metropolitan Park. From alli all the city of Santiago can be appraised almost (when the contamination allows it).

Day 26 of April of 1908, day of Passover de Resurreccion, the Church of Santiago inaugurates with great solemnity the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception. It was chosen as model the work of the escultor Jaconetti that presides over the column of the Plaza Espana, in Rome. The image was done by the Foundation of the Val Dorne, of Paris.
