Ukrainian Memorial Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is the Ukrainian Memorial, homage to the immigrants, in a replica of an orthodox church, originally built in inland Paraná State, hosting pessankas (easter eggs artwork) and icons exhibition.

Large numbers of Ukrainian immigrants settled in Curitiba, mostly between 1895 and 1897, when 20 thousands arrived. They were peasants from Galicia, who immigrated to Brazil to become small farmers. Nowadays there are 300 thousand Ukrainian-Brazilians living in Paraná.

É uma composição simples mas muito efectiva. Acho excelente a ideia de colocar a lua a quebrar a simetria da foto. As cores estão lindíssimas e a definição é excepcional. Muito bem.

Bom dia Carlos!
A foto está incrivelmente bela, com esse céu azul escuro e a lua com uma nitidez espetacular (excelente profundidade de campo) e o posicionamento vertical da imagem destacando-se a parte superior do memorial!
Já estive neste lugar e quando entrei, apesar de bem simples e ser apenas uma réplica, com a música suave que tocava, senti uma grande emoção... uma vez que sou descendente de ucranianos (o pai de meu pai era de lá, mas não o conheci)! É uma comunidade muito fechada e meu avô foi do tipo "ovelha negra", tanto que não ficou nas colônias!
Enfim... bela mostra e homenagem!

thanks for this informative post, I have to admit I did not know that there is such a large Ukrainian diaspora in Brazil. and I definitely like the photo, especially how the half-moon mirrors the shape of the wooden dome. the details are great, as is the clear blue sky. excellent work, my compliments.

very interesting structure: i thought it was a ukrainian church as i opened the thumbnail, but then noticed the title and read your note. beautiful blue in the background: perfect contrast for the yellowish tiles of the memorial.

by the way, there are supposedly around 200K latvian descent brazilians too... most of their ancestors ended up in brazil by the end of the XIX century, beginning of the XXth as part of a popular cult (the leaders of the cult managed to persuade latvian peasants that the new coming would take place in the jungle of brazil)...

That was surely a new fact. I know there's a lot of Ukrainians and russians in Northern USA and Canada but Brazil no idea, well why not. Brazil seems to be cool place.
Its a very very very good comp and the moon sure does it to access extra mood in to the image. it looks very orthodox building, and that also helps to make a bit malplace in this subtropical environment.

É uma delícia ver como esse prédio rende boas fotos. Aliás, o lugar todo!
Aqui você explorou divinamente as curvas e ângulos da parte superiro do edifício e fez ressaltar as linhas do teto, o que acredito serem emblemáticas da cultura artuitetônica ucraniana tradicional.
O céu e a lua... bom, essas sãoi duas cerejas num bolo delicioso :D

a very nice photo Carlos.
the reason that I not made a critique by you other shot with the dog, was that I thought that the administation would put it off because the rules of the tos. But it was there and it stays there. It was a very good composition Carlos my compliments for it. This one is also very nice, good contrast fine pov anbd a good quality. I like it a lot, have anice evening.

The fine light makes the structure really stand out!
I notice the use of wood where even the roof tiles are made in that material...

a simplicidade desta imagem e estupefante. Mesmo com estes detalhes architetonicos minimos e a lua a espreita esta imagem da uma impressao formidavel. Para que complicar na composicao se da pra fazer simples? No entanto, eu sei o quao dificil e fazer algo simples. Fica tao mais facil em pegar uma wide-angle e colocar tudo pra dentro da imagem. So o mestre sabe reduzir ao essencial e isto e exatamente o que voce fez aqui.

Very beautiful composed with strong light but perfect to on that wooden church. Most be a great building, at least in the way you show it here. Composition is top, well thought and the moon adds a nice lettle though important detail to it...very nice work.

Eu gosto do harmonioso equilíbrio que existe nesta foto. A grande iluminação, lindas tonalidades refletidas na estrutura da cúpula, o que contrastou com o belamente profundo azul do céu.

I had missed this lovely photo that informs your latest post. The colors of the sky and the golden hues of the wood are remarkably complementary, in this simple but elegant composition. You have chosen a symmetric perspective which works very well in this case. The little bit of symmetry-breaking, the presence of the moon makes it even more interesting.
