Photographer’s Note

Street Roberto Simonsen, 136, Center. Besides sheltering the Solar of the Marquesa dos Santos, this it is also the address of the Division of Iconography and Museums, a photographic collection of the city, that portrays to São Paulo and their urban transformations in the last 140 years.


The building already known it hides a file of rare pictures

Of great historical and documental value, the collection dates from 1935, year in that Mário of Andrade created the Department of Municipal Culture. In the beginning, they were gathered about 2.000 photographic images of the city, mainly of the area of the old Center, in the period from 1862 to 1920.

Besides this group of pictures, they went being included images that documented the activities and projects of the Department of Culture and of municipal works. Economical risings of conditions partner, infantile parks, construction of the Stadium of Pacaembu, of Andrade's Biblioteca Mário, opening of the avenue July Nine, rectification of Rio Tietê is some examples than one can find in this collection.
